玛特廖娜是我们很熟悉的名字，因为俄罗斯著名的民间工艺品就是这个名字，她是由“母亲（mather）”转译而来，我们的主人公也正是有着母亲的胸怀和圣女的心灵的人。玛特廖娜一生坎坷，她总是用宽容和仁爱对抗着世界的不公与残忍。她对自己的物质生活无欲无求，但是在精神生活上却是有着最崇高最虔诚的向往，她深受历史悠久的东正教的影响，按照东正教的教规来规范自己的生活，在言行举止和生活中的每一个细节上都流露出东正教女圣徒的那种神圣性。她为别人帮忙从来不求回报，在她看来，一切物质利益都是身外之物，都只是一时而无法永久保存。与她相比，那些还在玛特辽娜活着的时候就开始惦记着她的财产，在她死后马上就跑来瓜分她的.遗产的那些人是多么的卑微和渺小。正是在像玛特辽娜这样遵守教规的人的身上，体现了大多数人已经丧失了的珍贵的精神追求和道德准则，而这些正是一个民族存在和发展不可或缺的东西“没有这样的圣徒就不会有乡村，就不会有城市，就不会有我们整个地球。”
玛特辽娜最后死得很惨，但是面容安详，并且保留了右手，因为上帝用来祝福的正是右手。
