每天都干这样的活儿，可是却得不到什么特别的奖励，黄牛渐渐玩起了心眼，它想反正活儿是大家的，又不是我自己的，该偷懒时就偷懒。于是，它一点都不使劲。可是，主人一点都发现不了。黄牛庆幸于自己的\'聪明才智，因为自己没费什么力气，依然能享受同马和毛驴相同的待遇。
一段时间之后，马也发现了黄牛这个秘密，可是主人并没有对它怎样，于是马也开始效仿。主人依然没有发现，干完活儿后，依然给它们三个分同样的草料。马为自己的聪明而偷偷地发笑。然而，那么大的犁杖有两个偷懒的，毛驴身上的担子自然就变重了。它每天都得付出比以前更多的努力，这才能够保证犁杖的正常运行。虽然每天流了很多汗，可是它并没有任何怨言。
一天，主人的犁杖坏了，不得不换成小的犁杖。换了小犁杖后，就不用三个同时拉了，只需一个就可以完成。主人考虑到黄牛的力气大，于是就让它上场。黄牛拉了一会儿就气喘吁吁了，无论主人怎么抽打，它都不动弹，因为它真的没有力气了。主人气愤地换成马，可是马的表现还不如黄牛，主人气愤极了，他想这毛驴肯定更白扯，根本就不用再试了。谁知，毛驴却主动要求试试。主人用怀疑的眼光看着它，还是同意了。让主人吃惊的是，毛驴不仅能拉动那个小犁杖，而且还拉到了终点，就这样，毛驴出色地完成了任务，那一天，主人奖励给它很大一堆草料，而黄牛和马只能羡慕地看着。第二天，主人就将黄牛和马卖到了屠宰场，而毛驴在劳动中过起了幸福的生活。
毛驴之所以能够给主人惊喜，是因为它平时的付出与磨砺，它知道工作不是给别人***，而是给自己***。于是由于它认识到了这一点，所以才让自己拥有了大的本领。其实，很多时候，我们人类也是如此，工作不是给任何人***，而是给自己***。任何想要投机取巧的做法，都无异于自取灭亡。
