这故事告诉我们∶佛教里有种多闻的人，经不起名利食色的诱惑，便贪著於世间的欲乐，为它所诳惑，而抛弃了修习善法功德的财宝。结果，不但丧失了善法，而且也丧失了生命及财物，弄得大忧苦，大悲泣，正是自寻烦恼。

因此，商人非常的苦恼。
这时，正好有位老人打从这儿经过，很热心地上前拍拍商人的肩说：「你不必为此发愁，只要你照著我的话去做，保证骆驼一定能抽出头来。」
「请快告诉我吧!」商人以为救兵来了，心里十分高兴。
「你把骆驼的脖子砍断，再把瓮也打破，不就可以了吗?」
商人高兴地照著老人的话去做，虽然骆驼的头出来了，却白白损失了一个瓮和一只骆驼。
智慧小语：老人的话虽然愚痴，照著做的商人更是蠢到极点。若是道听涂说，自己却丝毫没有判断力，肯定会遭到世人的嘲弄。

而现在正在禅修中的同修们，也同样要依靠自己的力量，以强大的觉性，将自己从昏沉、妄念、无明的枷锁中拔脱出来，要像大象一样靠自己的力量挣脱出来，不要只想依赖外力。同时靠自己的力量得来的自由，更是弥足珍贵。
