五色糯米饭的由来，有这么一个传说：相传，有位才智超群的壮人韦特桂在土皇手下为臣。一年大旱，他为解百姓疾苦，奏邀土皇亲往壮乡视察，用计使土皇免去皇粮。土皇后来发觉上了当，把特桂视为眼中钉，肉中刺，下令捉拿他归案，壮乡百姓闻知，连夜送特桂上山躲藏。皇兵捉拿不着，就放火烧山。
那天是农历三月三，皇兵走后，乡亲们在一棵大枫树洞里找到特桂尸体，含泪把他葬在枫树旁。此后，每年三月三，壮人就用枫叶等植物汁液把糯米饭染成红、黄、紫、黑色，蒸后拿到山上祭祀特桂。
五色糯米饭是用植物汁液染成的五种颜色，不仅美观美味，而且有一定药用价值。红蓝草有生血作用；“黄花饭”有清热凉血等作用；用枫叶煮成的饭，人食之能“健筋骨、益肠胃”。
