我随便拿了一张作业本大小的纸折了起来，前几次还顺利，折到第五次时，就只有一个瓶盖那么大了，连第六次都折不到、我拿来一块石头，使劲向纸砸去，可是，第六次纸总也折不上去，还开着口，好像在嘲笑我。我想，一定是这张纸太小了，我去找一张大纸来！
这次用的是一张报纸，我边折边想，这次一定可以了。三次，四次……我心里很高兴，哼起了小曲，可折到第七次时，就折不动了。我想；这张纸太厚了！不行，找一张薄的试试。
我找到了一张半透明的宣纸，心想，这张又大又薄的纸一定可以折到九次，但是最终的结果是——最多折七次，第八次只能折一半，再不能完全折过去。我不相信，又反复试了好几次，结果仍然一样。
这究竟是为什么呀？我用计算器算一下。我一算，第一次是2层，第二次是4层……第七次是128层，第八次是256层，第九次就是512层啊！而折第八次时，这张纸的面积就剩先两平方厘米了，要在这么小的.面积上折512层，当然折不过去了！
在这虽然是一个小实验，却让我懂得了一个道理：要想得到科学的结论，不能凭空想象，而是亲自去尝试。每一个科学的结论，都是经过数十次，数百次，乃至上千次尝试。写出这篇文章的作者，肯定不知实验了多少次，才得出了这个结论，如果有条件，都可以去亲自验证一下。对待科学的态度应该是认真的、严谨的，只有接受住反复的验证的结论，才是一个令人信服的结论。

由于在很多情况下，说明文是对客观存在的说明与介绍，因此语言的表述也应该尽可能地给人以客观可信的感觉，比如：
（1）I think that getting up late is not always a bad thing.
（2）It is said that getting up late is not always a bad thing.
相比之下，例（2）的语言要比例（1）的语言客观一些，容易让人接受一些。如果再作一些表述上的改动：
（3）Getting up late is not always a bad thing， according to Franklin Smith， a well-known psychologist in Stanford University.
引进著名人士作为信息的来源，可以使想要说明的内容更具有说服力。如果我们将例（3）中的always再改为necessarily，就可使整个句子更客观、委婉，便于为读者接受：
（4）Getting up late is not necessarily a bad thing， according to Franklin Smith， a well-known psychologist in Stanford University.
在英语中，采用被动语态，引进权威的信息来源以及选用委婉的词语是使说明文避免主观色彩，增加客观性，从而为读者接受的重要语言手段
