6只猴子分别被关在3间空房子里，每间两只，房子里分别放置一定数量的食物，但放的位置高度不一样。第一间房子的食物放在地上，第二间房子的食物分别从易到难悬挂在不同高度的位置上；第三间房子的食物悬挂在屋顶。数日后，他们发现第一间房子的猴子一死一伤，第三间房子的两只猴子死了，只有第二间房子的两只猴子活得好好的。
原来，第一间房子里的两只猴子一进房子就看到了地上的食物，于是，为了争夺唾手可得的食物而大动干戈，结果一死一伤。第三间房子的猴子虽然作了努力，但因食物太高，难度过大，够不着，被活活饿死了。
只有第二间房子的两只猴子先是各自凭自己的本事跳跃取食，然后在房间跑对角线增加助跑距离跳跃取食，最后对于高高悬挂的食物，两只猴子认定只有合作才能取得，于是，一只猴子托起另一只猴子跳起取食。这样，每天都能取得够吃的食物，双双得以存活。
这则寓言说明了岗位难度过低，人人能干，体现不出能力与水平，选拔不出人才，反倒成了内耗式的争斗甚至残***，其结果无异于第一间房子里的两只猴子；岗位的难度过大，虽努力却不能及，往往也体现不出能力和水平，甚至埋没、抹***了人才，犹如第三间房子里的两只猴子；只有岗位难易适当，循序渐进，犹如第二间房子里的食物，才能真正体现出人的能力与水平，发挥人的能动性和智慧。
