生活是一切艺术创作的源泉，大自然本身的色彩总是很美的，它变化丰富和谐。如金光灿烂的丰收景色，一望无际的蓝色海洋，万紫千红的花草、植物，变化无穷的彩霞，五光十色的焰火，都能激发我们对色彩的美感，启发我们的用色选择。所以我们应该认真地研究和学习这些自然色彩现象、色彩规律，把概括、提炼、夸张的手法运用到我们图案创作中，使其更完美、丰富。如曾经在国内外风行一时的“宇宙色”纺织品就是从彩霞的变幻中得到启发，创作出来的。
我国历史悠久，有着极其丰富的文化遗产，美术作品和传统图案在色彩运用上也有极大的成就，如仰韶文化的彩陶，汉代的漆器，隋唐的壁画、唐三彩，以及各个时期的丝绸在色彩上都有其各自的特色，形成了我国民族的独特风格。我们在创作时应该吸收一切有益的东西，要做到古为今用。
