Partly autobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism and sinister gothic elements.

到信阳的时候已经下午四点了，我们只能先去南湾湖了，妈妈说南湾湖是信阳最有名的风景区了，我和爸爸妈妈上了船。哇，南湾湖很大，湖上有很多小岛，有猴岛、鸟岛、花莲岛、茶岛等等。我们先去了猴岛，猴岛上有许多小猴子，有的趴在树上睡大觉，有的正在吃游客给的`东西，还有的在追逐着玩。有一只猴子蹲在我的前面，吓得我不敢过去，等他走了之后我才走过去。

接下来我们去了鸟岛，鸟岛上有鹦鹉、孔雀、鸽子……我们去了鸟类演习场，许多鸟在这表演节目，首先是小鹦鹉做算术，演习场的工作人员让小朋友出乘法，有个小朋友说：“3*3=几？”小鹦鹉想了想，叼了一个9。好聪明的小鹦鹉呀。然后是让小鸽子来叼钱，财迷的小鸽子专挑大钱叼，我一手拿着十元钱，一手拿着一元钱，小鸽子看了一下，把我的十元钱叼走了，真是一个财迷的小鸽子。还有其他的鸟表演了好多好看的节目。

本来，我还想去茶岛和花莲岛，可是已经晚上七点了，我有点儿饿了，爸爸就请我吃鱼，鱼很鲜嫩，听说这儿的鱼是从南湾湖打来的，我吃了好多好多的鱼，好开心呀！吃完饭，爸爸带我溜达了一圈，晚上我们住在了地税宾馆，我睡在爸爸妈妈中间很幸福。

第二天，我们起早去了鸡公山，我们沿着盘山公路开车到了鸡公山顶，一圈一圈的绕上去，我的头都快绕晕了。鸡公山分两条线，我们先去了报晓峰，山顶是看起来象公鸡的石头，妈妈说是雄鸡报晓，在石头上刻着“天下第一鸡”，我在这儿照了很多相。

从报晓峰下来，我们又去了长生谷，长生谷是一条山谷，一路上有很多水，我玩了很长时间的水，下山的时候，我又玩了水球，水球不听我的话，我在里边摔了很多跟头，爸爸看了，肚子都笑疼了。下山之后，我们就开车回家了，信阳是一个产茶的地方，爸爸在路上买了很多信阳毛尖，我一路睡到了家，到家都晚上十点了，我很累但很开心。
