小主人的文具盒里有两种文具，一种是铅笔，一种是橡皮。骄傲的铅笔看不起橡皮，常常奚落它。
“你会写字吗？臭橡皮。”铅笔傲慢地问。
“不会，铅笔兄弟。”橡皮谦虚地回答。
“我就知道你不会，无能的东西。”铅笔说，带着更加轻蔑的神气。
“我虽然不会写字，但并不是无能。如果你写错了字，我能帮你擦掉。”
“住嘴，”铅笔恼怒了，“你有什么资格和我比，你就是一样废物。”铅笔生气地说。橡皮不再理会铅笔。
有一天，铅笔写错字了，他在作业本上涂涂改改，老师见了生气地说：“你怎么写得这么脏，赶快把写错的字擦掉重写。“铅笔后悔了，早知道就不应该和橡皮吵架，如果我让橡皮帮忙就不用重做了。他连忙向橡皮道歉：“橡皮橡皮快帮帮我吧，以前我对你不好，你能原谅我吗？”橡皮可宽容了，他连忙说：“好！”就把铅笔写错的'字擦得干干净净。
从此，铅笔再也不骄傲了，和橡皮成了一对形影不离的好兄弟。

铅笔说：“那时我在休息，怎么可能刺你？”橡皮说：“你还不承认！”两人就要打起来的时候，目击者书本出来劝阻，说：“铅笔确实不是故意的，是小主人逼着它这么做的！”橡皮一听，急忙向铅笔道歉：“对不起，是我错怪了你！”铅笔说：“对不起，我也有错。”

慢慢走着，不知何时，已经来到了那片沙地旁边。
斜斜的土堆不见了，变成了红砖堆砌成的台阶；高大的砖堆不见了，露出了底部被遗忘的水表；陈旧的梯子不见了，只把一簇难以寻找的灰尘留在了沙地里……
我怀念着这里过去的样子，却意外看到台阶旁的一个砖头上模糊不清地露出鲜红色。我的好奇心立刻被挑起了一角，轻轻吹开上面的灰尘，一个斜斜的字体便显露出来：菊。
看到这个字，好奇心便被遮盖了，记忆的闸门顿时打开：我仍然清晰记得三年前王奶奶送给我的那盆菊花，王奶奶并不是这条街的，但她的热情却永远属于这条街。我喜欢到王奶奶家玩，王奶奶也十分乐意接待我玩。
一天，我来到了王奶奶家，奶奶看到我来了，眉毛都弯成了一条线，殊不知，我是来看王奶奶的花的。那儿的花很多，五光十色，让人眼花缭乱，一瞬，瞥见了一个瘦弱的花茎，顶着一朵淡黄色的花。
奶奶看出了我的表情，便不慌不忙的解释着：“这是菊花，你听说过吗？”还没等我回答，便继续说到“菊花，是那种有文化的人喜欢的花……”“那，奶奶也是有文化的人吗？”奶奶摸摸我的头，怜爱的说“我可没啥文化，不过喜欢种花。”此时此刻，我竟完全忘了，王奶奶只是一个“邻居”，而我，却真的把她当成了奶奶。
那天我走的时候，王奶奶把那盆菊花送给了我，她说，这个可以治眼病，你以后会用上。又给我讲了菊花应怎样照看……遗憾的是，王奶奶不久后就搬走了，菊花也很快死了，也许，只有王奶奶，才真正懂得花。
清风把我吹回现实，我将那块砖悄悄埋起。我不想让这份夹杂着对话的回忆，再次被遗忘。

“后来，你爸爸出世了，这里的路面修成了宽阔的沙石路。人们可高兴了，下雨下雪天，再也不用担心了。但是，一到刮风的天气，可就不妙了。路上尘土飞扬，人们行走十分不便，你爸爸的沙眼就是那时得的。”
“怪不得我爸爸那样怕风。”
“你满月的时候，来了许多修路工人，他们把道路修成了现在这样的水泥路面……”

“高速公路太好喽！”
“那爸爸现在又去修什么路了？”
“你爸爸去修铁路了。铁路行走速度快，运货量大，给咱们的交通带来了很大的方便。”
