《水浒传》讲的是宋朝年间的起义故事。
第一回讲的'是：当时，瘟疫流行，皇上派洪太尉去祈福。他拜见真人后，就跑上山找天师了。在上山的路上，先后碰见了大蛇和老虎，但都不去吃他。又爬了一段路，看见一个牧童骑着黄牛。太尉一看，有一个小孩，便向他问路。牧童却说，这山上有很多的野兽！劝他别去了。太尉一想也是，便下山了。之后也吃素五天。快走时，发现了一个房间，贴满了封条。太尉要开，真人劝他别开，太尉不听，强行要开。里面黑黑的，用火把发现有四个字“遇洪而开”，便要挖开。真人又进行劝住，太尉不听。挖开了一个大洞，突然发出了一声巨响！一团黑气化作金光四散开来，大家纷纷逃走。
从这个故事看出，当时的太尉胆小怕死，不听劝。由此可见，当时的宋朝是多么昏暗，竟用这样的人当太尉！

《水浒传》第一回目录是“张天师祈禳瘟疫，洪太尉误走妖魔。”
这一回还没有切入正文，主要说了两个人，一个是张天师，另一个是太尉洪信。这一回是引首与正文之间的桥梁。
北宋末年天下大乱，原先是洪信惹来的，方腊又是谁惹来的呢？可能有另一个洪信。起码梁山这一百零八人是洪信引出来的。这件事对北宋是祸是福？就《水浒传》而言，是帮了北宋，因为这一百零八人招安后征辽，征方腊，保了大宋，而历史的真实是天下大乱，才有了宋江造反的故事。无论祸福，职责都在洪信，不在皇帝。要不然，儒家君君、臣臣、父父、子子的信条，就不能立足了。
一百零八人的出世，同洪信有关，那也是天意所授，遇洪而开罢了。更况何，仁宗年间就无洪信太尉这个人，《水浒传》造了个洪信，引出故事才是目的。
借一个还没出世的.张继先，造一个洪信，进入《水浒传》正文。
凡是皇帝所为，都不能言错的，所以横直都没有职责，所以才保证了这部书流传到今日，不能不说这是一种智慧，是《水浒传》式的智慧。就这样还是引来了《荡冠志》。
千秋功罪，后人自有公论。
