我认为对每一位英语学习者来说，朗读和背诵是必不可少的。尤其对初学英语的初中学生来说是至关重要的。朗读和背诵是提高学生英语口语能力和英语成绩的有效途径，也是必经之路。朗读和背诵也是克服当前中国学生的\"哑巴英语\"的有效途径。更为重要的是朗读和背诵还有以下几方面的好处：
第一通过朗读和背诵，可以积累大量实用的英语短语、句子、习惯用语；可以扩大视野，在脑子里储存大量有用的词汇、短语、习惯用法。
第二通过大量的朗读和背诵可以培养语感。语感的培养离不开\"读\"这种最基本的实践方式。朗读是训练语感的好方法，让学生反复朗读甚至背诵作品，特别是精彩段落和句子。读得多了，背得多了，自然就形成了英语语感。语感一旦形成，在以后的学习中可以受益匪浅。比如有一道填空题，你甚至不知道这个句子的具体意义，你却能说出该填什么词，这就是你的语感。这样就可以自然的避免许多不必要的错误。
第三，坚持不懈的朗读和背诵也是训练语言、语调、语流和连贯性、流畅性口语表达能力的有效途径，有助于改进语音。通过朗读，尤其是模仿正确、地道的英语语音语调，可以纠正和训练自己的语音语调，掌握说英语的种种技巧，如连读、失去爆破、同化、重读、弱读等，从而迅速发展口语表达能力。
因此，在初中阶段尤其是初一的英语教学中一定要重视朗读和背诵。
