渐渐的，高个子铅笔骄傲起来了。一天晚上，它对橡皮说：“扫地的，把理发师叫来，我要开一个会。”橡皮立刻把卷笔刀叫来。铅笔说：“从今天开始，你们都得为我服务。”“啊！为什么呀？”橡皮和卷笔刀异口同声地问道。“没有为什么，大家都回去睡觉吧！”到了深夜，橡皮打电话给卷笔刀：“老弟，你睡了没？”“有话就说，别拐弯抹角、拖泥带水的。”“刚才铅笔说的话你还记得吗？”“记得，正想着呢！”“我们让它试试缩短生命的滋味，你天天帮它理发，我就帮它扫地，反正小主人是个好学生，写作业的时候也只有百分之三是错的字。”“好，明天劝一劝它，如果它不听，我们就实行计划。”“OK，再见。”“再见。”
第二天，橡皮劝了劝铅笔，卷笔刀也劝了劝铅笔，铅笔不听。卷笔刀和橡皮就开始实施计划。从此，橡皮就当了“助理”，卷笔刀就当了“理发师”。日复一日，长长的铅笔变成铅笔头了，铅笔头被小主人扔掉。橡皮和卷笔刀惋惜地对它说：“如果你还想成为我们中的一员，你就改一改你的毛病吧。”
