全书从60多岁的退休老人哈罗德收到一份昔日好友奎妮的来信开始讲述。奎妮与哈伦德已经有20年没有联系，信上奎妮告诉哈罗德自己患上了癌症，将不久于人世，这封信是专门来和他道别的。看到信的那一刻，哈罗德非常吃惊，往事也随之涌上心头，他觉得应该为奎妮做点什么，为了让奎妮恢复健康或活得更久，他决定从所住的金斯布里奇徒步走到贝里克郡，全程600多公里。哈罗德没有告知妻子莫琳，没有携带生活必需品和徒步所需装备，是一次真正意义上的“裸走”，因为哈罗德坚信只有这样才能对奎妮的'健康有所帮助。在没有借助任何交通工具情况下，哈罗德耗时87天，成功走到了奎妮的疗养院，见到了奎妮最后一面。
