从北宫门进入颐和园，过苏州路，走中御路，来到宿云檐，北边就是半壁桥。此桥横跨于颐和园后溪河上，在风平水静时半圆形的桥拱与水面上的倒影形成了一个正圆，犹如一块玉璧，桥的造型刚好是半块玉璧，故称半壁桥。
它是一座单孔拱桥，拱高有7.4米，采用高大单拱的原因是桥下要驶过皇帝的画舫。拱之上便是曲折的桥面，桥长30.64米。桥宽4.94米，由砖墙汉白玉打造。这座桥有望柱36根，两望柱之间相距1.34米。望柱高140.5厘米，宽24.5厘米，底部为正方形，上部分为一个圆顶，这象征着天圆地方。这些望柱的矗立也使桥变得丰富。从整体看上去，桥呈两侧对称，正中央刻有龙头，代表着皇帝至高无上的权利。
当观看完半壁桥后，向西望去，林彪桥映入眼帘。这座桥1970年修建，于1971年完成。建造它，是因为当时林彪身体不好，行走困难，为方便他的汽车通行，就修建了这座桥。林彪桥是一座双拱石桥，整体看上去，相对平缓，利于通车。它的拱长16.2米，拱高5.2米。大拱的两侧分别有两个小拱。这样的设计既节省了材料，又为桥的稳定性更上了一层楼。整个桥长26.7米，而桥宽有3.96米，30根望柱，每根高135厘米，宽23厘米，这样可以充分保障行人的安全。与半壁桥一样的是，它的下方也是正方形，上为圆形，代表天圆地方，桥的两侧刻有石云装饰。
向林彪桥东去，经过苏州街，澹宁堂到谐趣园。谐趣园以东便是知鱼桥的位置，桥的名字出自庄子和惠子“子非鱼，安知鱼之乐？”。其牌楼上刻有乾隆皇帝亲手写的御诗。桥是标准的.板桥，看上去扁扁长长，不仅可以节省材料，还可以维修方便。知鱼桥的高度极低，几乎贴近水面。游人站在桥上，可以近距离的观水，喂鱼。桥面的望柱拱34根，他们均匀的分布在桥的两侧，每两根间距1.24米，之间用两根纵向的石柱相连。望柱与望柱上石砖的四个面都凹了进去。给人以空间冲击感。这些细节，给这座桥富有历史底蕴和文化内涵。
颐和园内石拱桥历史悠久，结构结实，文化丰富，它展示了中国劳动人民丰富的智慧。

石拱桥，是爷爷辈的，它虽然也有缺点，但比独木桥好上一百倍。它坚固结实，不像独木桥容易烂掉，断掉；它宽，能行很多人，不像独木桥窄，只能行一人；它的桥洞里还能行船，桥洞和倒影组成了一个圆圆的月亮；对了，石拱桥还很安全，有护栏，独木桥却没有，容易让人滑落入水；石拱桥还很美观，比如赵州桥有1300年历史，老寿星至今完好无损，桥身上的两条腾云驾雾的巨龙依然活跃地抢绣球。优点讲完了，该讲讲它的缺点了，石拱桥只能建在小河上，现在的大江上都没有建石拱桥，于是，它退休了。
长江大桥上场了，长江大桥是儿子辈的，它雄伟壮观，石拱桥、独木桥没法比，既能通车，又能行人，底下还能通大轮船呢！简直就像一个钢铁巨人横在江面睡觉。可能，你们都想到了一首诗：“一桥飞架南北，天堑变通途”。这“钢铁巨人”也有缺点，只能从这边那边，太普通，所以立交桥又登上台了。
