匡衡每次放鹅，通常是让鹅自已取食，他躲在学堂的墙角下偷听，如痴如醉。晚上回到家，因为家里买不起蜡烛，所以深夜无法读书的痛苦一直在折磨着他。匡衡的邻居家倒是有蜡烛，只可惜光亮却照不到他的家。对知识的渴望促使匡衡突发奇想，他拿起凿子把墙凿了一个小洞。邻家的亮光照过来，匡衡迫不及待地翻开书，就着这微弱的光芒，如饥似渴地读起书来。就这样，匡衡白天在学堂偷听，晚上就着小洞里的`光亮读书，学问大有长进。
这件事让一个叫何生亮的人知道了，这人是当地富豪文不识的管家。他告诉匡衡，文老爷有很多藏书，他可以介绍匡衡到文家干活，从而有机会读到更多的书。
匡衡大喜过望，第二天便去了文家。文不识看他年纪虽小，举止却很得体，便让他做自己的书童，每天陪着他读书。一个月下来，文不识对匡衡赞赏有加。发薪水时，匡衡却分文不取，这让文不识很费解，问道：“为什么不要工钱呢？”
匡衡恳切地回答：“如果能读完老爷的藏书，我就心满意足了！”
文不识深受感动，从此就资助匡衡读书。后来，匡衡成为了一位非常有名的大学问家。

时间一天天过去了，公鸡爸爸决定让宝贝儿子上学去，公鸡高高兴兴地同意了。
学校就建在山边的大石头上，校长是一头脱了毛的狮子，大概是老了，白天几乎看不到他在学校出现。校长把公鸡带到猎豹班，对他说：“你可千万别惹你的猎豹老师，他可是全镇的武术冠军。”
在学校里的日子，让公鸡更加高兴，因为班上没有哪个同学比他更强健。小鸡斗不过他，小鸭每天都躲着他，小兔是他跟班，青蛙天天缠着他，要他教跳高。
猎豹老师也不管不问，每天就是和鳄鱼斗斗嘴和河马吹吹牛。最近有一次，班上教美术的孔雀姐姐，就告状说学员公鸡上课不听话总是违反纪律，还欺负班上的小同学。他甚至扬言总有一天他要当这个学校的校长，让所有的人都听他的。
今天是星期五，猎豹老师早早来到办公室，整理好文件刚准备喝口茶，小鸭、小兔跑来了：“老师、老师，公鸡又欺负我们了。”
“好，老师知道了，我等会去了解了解情况。”猎豹话还没有说完，小青蛙跑过来了，：“老师，公鸡说要我给他钱，才教我跳高!他抢了我3块钱。”
“有这种事?快，我们去看看!”猎豹老师知道事情严重，赶紧跑到教室里。
猎豹老师走到公鸡的身边，和蔼地说：“老师知道你很漂亮，也很会跳高，今天老师就和你比一比跳高好不好?你用两只脚，我只用一只脚。”
公鸡心想：我见过老师跑步，但没有见过老师跳高，而且只用一只脚，他一定跳不赢我，因为我从小就会跳高。公鸡自信满满地答应了。
这时候老师说：“既然是比赛，就要有一些注，这样吧：如果谁输了，就要听赢了的那个人的话，好不好?”
公鸡一听还有注，立马来了兴趣，大声地说：“老师，你可要说话算数啊，你就等着认输吧，嘿嘿!”
“一言既出，驷马难追。”老师笑着说。
学校里的老师和同学们知道公鸡要和猎豹老师比赛跳高，都热热闹闹地围了过来。同学们都知道猎豹老师每天都跑步，而且跑得飞快。但都没有见过他跳高，心里都在为猎豹老师捏把汗呢，可千万别让自高自大欺负弱小的`公鸡赢了去啊。
狮子校长当裁判，小黄莺当起了发令员，猴子则当起了啦啦队长。校园气氛可热烈了，就像过节一样。
随着小黄莺清脆的叫声，比赛开始了。
狮子校长让公鸡先跳，只见公鸡股足了劲，绷紧全身肌肉，纵身一跃，身子直飞向高空。
“多么漂亮的一跳!多么漂亮的一跳!”跟班小兔欢呼着。
“别得意得太早了。”小鸭不服气地说。
轮到猎豹老师了，只见他轻轻一跃，身子就像弹簧一样冲出去，再加上他流线型的身材，在空中划了一道完美的曲线。
经过大黑牛的仔细测量，猎豹老师的高度是公鸡的2倍。
这时候公鸡低下了头，不好意思地说：“老师，我听你的。”
猎豹老师严肃地说：“小公鸡，你先向全班同学道个歉，然后答应老师以后再也不违反纪律，不欺负同学，不骄傲自满了，怎么样?”
公鸡红着脸向同学们道了歉，惭愧地低下了头。最后抬起头，大声地队老师说：“老师，我听你的!”
