His house faced south and beyond his doorway stood the two great peaks, Taihang and Wangwu, obstructing the way. He called his sons, and hoe in hand they began to dig up these mountains with great determination. Another graybeard, known as the Wise Old Man, saw them and said derisively, "How silly of you todo this! It is quite impossible for you few to dig up those two huge mountains." The Foolish Old Man replied, "When I die, my sonswill carry on; when they die, there will be my grandsons, and then their sons and grandsons, and so on to infinity. High as they are, the mountains cannot grow any higher and with every bit we dig, they will be that much lower. Why can't we clear them away?" Having refuted the Wise Old Man's wrong view, he went on digging every day, unshaken in his conviction. God was moved by this, and he sent down two angels, who carried the mountains away on their backs.

One day, Yu Gong called all his family together to talk about how to move the two mountains to other places. His wife said, "An old man like you cannot even move a small hill, not to mention the two high mountains. Even if you can, where can you throw so much earth and stone?"

So it was decided. His children started to dig the mountains, led by the old man Yu Gong.

天上的玉皇大帝感觉手痒痒，就叫来千里眼和顺风耳，对他们说：“联今天觉得手痒，是不是有感人的事？快给朕查一查！”千里眼和顺风耳一齐去了资料室，过了几分钟他们对玉皇大帝说：“禀告皇上，儿臣找到了，有一个叫孟姜女的人，她丈夫为了修长城，活活累死了，因此而哭泣。”玉皇大帝不以为然地说:“哦，那就赏她十万两黄金，再把她丈夫复活，就行了。”顺风耳担心地说:“如果把她丈夫复活长城不就倒了？”“哎，长城倒了可以再造嘛！对了，是不是还有感人的事啊？”千里眼回答道:“哦，还有一件事，就是一个叫愚公的老人，因家的前后都隔着一座大山，交通不便，所以想挖平这两座大山。”玉皇大帝深受感动地说:“没想到这年头还有这么坚定的人，你们两个快去帮他把这两座山扔到东海里去。”千里眼和顺风耳暗自在心里抱怨道:哎！今天又要加班了。
