In spring, 2006, Miss Pan took the course I taught named Algebraic Structures and Combinatorial Mathematics. This inquisitive and assiduous young woman was sometimes the last to leave after my class, raising novel questions related to the subject. I found that she understood the knowledge in depth and detail. Furthermore, I still remember during the spring vocation in May, due to the break-down of my mail box, I missed her mails to discussing some questions. But the following week during the course time, she asked me directly. Her zeal for knowledge and the spirit to explore answers really leave me a deep impression. Finally, she was among the few students who got almost full marks in every test in class which showed her exceeding grasp of every chapter. Thus, I gave her 98/100 for the excellent performance in my course.

提及清明节的起源，我们就不得不说起，另外两个今日已逐渐为人们淡忘的节日——上巳节与寒食节。在宋朝之前，这三个同位于三月上旬的节日，是同时存在的。
上巳节一般在农历三月初三，相传是为纪念黄帝诞辰而设置，是中华最古老的节日之一。这一天人们通常会招魂辟邪，因传说柳条可以招魂辟邪，故在上巳节这天，人们会编柳条，折柳枝并随身携带。此外，上巳节能进行的传统活动，还有许许多多，例如在巫师道士的指导下，进行一项称作“祓禊”的活动。甚至，据说就连汉武帝都在上巳节当天求过子。正因习俗活动众多，官方钦定的上巳节，受到了众多百姓的喜爱。
而寒食节的起源，则伴随着一个传说。传说春秋时期，因晋国内乱，公子重耳，即后来的晋文公，流亡乡野。与其同行者中，有一个人名叫介子推。一天，重耳病倒，但因钱财几乎用尽，没有食物可以供其养病，无奈之下，介子推一咬牙，割下了自己大腿上一块肉，熬了一锅肉汤，献给重耳。重耳后来知道真相后，感动非常。后来重耳成功即位，称晋文公，他赏赐了几乎所有流亡时期的随行者，却偏偏忘记了介子推。后经人进谏后，晋文公忙去寻找介子推，然而介子推已带着老母亲隐居山中，不愿出山了。《异苑》中这样记载：“介子推不出，晋文公焚林求之，终抱木而死。公抚木哀嗟，伐树制屐，每怀割股之恩……视屐曰：‘悲乎足下！’”晋文公放山火逼介子推出山，却不幸烧死了介子推。晋文公后悔非常，为纪念介子推，他下令，一段时间内，所有人不准用火，只可食冷饭，故称“寒食节”。寒食节这天，人们通常扫墓上坟。
最初的“清明”，其实并非一个节日，而是一个节气，出现在冬至后一百零八天。清明能成为一个节日，其原因有很大一部分是其紧随在距冬至一百零五天的寒食节之后。在寒食节，人们进行了严肃的祭祖活动，恰好清明就为人们提供了出门踏青郊游的欢乐时光。
不过，虽然清明成了一个节日，但人们仍然偏爱活动丰富的上巳节。直到一个富足且百姓生活安定幸福的朝代——唐代诞生了。
在唐朝，清明这天踏青郊游，成了几乎为所有百姓所热爱的一项习俗。而且不但人们在这天加入了大量娱乐活动，朝廷还确立了一个为期七天的“小长假”，这让清明节为百姓着喜爱的程度，甚至一举赶上上巳节。
到了宋代，人们推崇“理学”，也就是“存天理，灭人欲”，朱熹就是一位著名的理学家。理学家们认为，上巳节的一些习俗是“伤风败俗”的，于是上巳节便渐渐没落。取而代之的，是寒食与清明的组合，这时的清明，还没有现在扫墓等习俗。
后来，因寒食节只有单一沉闷的祭祖功能，清明脱离了寒食，成为了一个娱乐性节日，在宋代成为了最受欢迎的节日。
到了明清时期，上巳节与寒食节基本消失，于是清明节融其自身的踏青，寒食节的扫墓，上巳节的插柳于一身，成为了现在，我们所熟知的清明节的雏形。
而到了今天，清明节更演变出了新的民族色彩——缅怀先烈，纪念英雄。这是我们，对先辈们流传下来的传统节日的一次传承与升华。四月四日的默哀便是一个极佳的例子。它证明了中华民族的凝聚力，见证了华夏人民对历史精粹的发扬，更标志着国人将一个个人的节日，上升到了民族集体的层面。这可以作为我们传承东方古典文化的一个楷模。
