万幸的是海伦并不是个轻易认输的人，她时刻微笑着面对生活。七岁的时候她就已发明了60多种不同的手势，并考此得以和家里人交流。她若想要面包，就会做出切面包和涂黄油的`动作。想要冰淇淋时她会用手裹住自己装出发抖的样子。
海伦在这方面非比一般，她绝顶聪明而又相当敏锐。通过努力她对这个陌生且迷惑的世界有了一些认识，但她仍有一些不足。
海伦五岁时开始意识到她与别人的不同。她发现家里的其他人不用像她那样做手势交流而是用嘴交谈，有时她站在两人中间触摸他们的嘴唇，可她不知道他们在说什么，而且她也不能发出带有含义的声音。她想讲话，可无论费多大的劲儿也无法使别人明白自己。这时她异常懊恼以至于常常在屋子里乱跑乱撞，灰心地又踢又喊。
就这样，随着年龄的增长，她的脾气也越来越大，变得狂野不训，家里人便为她雇了一名家庭教师——安妮·沙莎文。幸运的海伦找到了一位世界上最好的老师。在安妮的悉心教授下，原本对生活已经死心的海伦又重新燃起了生命之火，并且学会了讲话，这对失聪的人来说是一个巨大的成就。
