忽然，荔姐听见身后似有声响，她心里十分紧张，回头一看，发现有一个人正远远跟在她身后向她追过来。荔姐马上意识到，一定是遇上歹人了。怎么办?这一片旷野，除了荒坟和稀稀疏疏的树，就只有自己和那个坏人。这时候，荔姐情急之下，反而镇定下来，她急中生智，走到一座坟边的白杨树下站定，把发簪耳环拔下来揣进怀里，又解下身上的丝带拴在脖子上，披头散发吐出舌头，迎面向着走过来的歹人，瞪着眼睛直直地看着。那人追到荔姐近前，荔姐又变着腔调叫他过来。那人走到荔姐面前仔细一看，原来是个吊死鬼，便吓得惊叫一声瘫软在地，再也爬不起来了。荔姐趁此机会，赶紧逃脱，幸免遇害。

荔姐虽是一位旧时女子，却在情急之中能自己解救自己，在恶人面前表现得沉着镇定又机智勇敢;而那个坏人，由于居心不良，反而送掉了自己性命。这个寓言告诉我们，世间本没有什么鬼怪，只有愚昧的人才相信有鬼。
