硫化氢不但很臭，而且是一种可以燃烧的气体。它一烧起来，就冒着淡蓝色的.火焰，产生一种刺鼻的气味，叫“二氧化硫”，叫你眼泪纵横。
在化学定性分析上，硫化氢很有用，因为它能与各种各样的金属离子，形成五光十色的硫化物：硫化锌（白色），硫化锰（肉色），硫化镉（黄色），硫化铁（黑色），硫化铅（黑色）。化学分析工作者就常常利用这些颜色，来鉴别矿物里有哪些金属。
