他们走到一棵小树前，儿子对父亲说：“爸爸，帮我量一下身高好吗？”“好的。”只见儿子挨着小树笔直地站着，爸爸在小树上留下一个标志，然后拿出钉子和锤子，蹲下身子，将钉子钉在小树上。儿子在父亲身后认真地看着。
秋去冬来，鹅毛大雪漫天飞舞，纷纷扬扬地下个不停，给大地铺上了一层白地毯。公园里静悄悄的，落光叶子的小树依然笔直地站在风雪中。人们用积雪在小树旁堆了个雪人，它头戴一顶瓜皮帽，手拿一把大扫帚，像一个士兵，站在雪地中，可爱极了！
冬去春来，小树冒出新芽，长得郁郁葱葱。父亲和儿子又去公园散步，他们来到小树前，想和去年量的.身高标志比一下。儿子站在小树旁一看，顿时大惊失色，他左思右想，抓耳挠腮，百思不得其解，忙问父亲：“我怎么比去年矮了许多？”父亲愣了一下，忽然想到了原因，笑着说：“儿子，不是你变矮了，而是小树长高了。小树是有生命的，它和你一样，都会长高。”
听了父亲的话，儿子茅塞顿开，终于明白了其中的道理。父子俩高高兴兴地回家了。
