玉皇大帝命令捉鬼大神钟馗到人世间去捉些鬼来，钟馗领旨后带着几个帮手到了下界，执着剑准备捉鬼。谁知阳世的鬼比阴间的鬼多而且凶。众鬼见钟馗来捉，各显手段与他纠缠不休。只见那冒失鬼上前夺剑，伶俐鬼搬腿抽腰，讨厌鬼拉靴摘帽，下流鬼宽衣解带，无赖鬼掀须掠眉，亡命鬼执刀对仗，淘气鬼挖鼻剜眼，醉酒鬼胡言乱语，贪财鬼奉上钱币，好色鬼扑面狂吻。众鬼跌倒地上，撕扯不开，使钟馗几位身怀法术却无法施展，更使众恶鬼气焰嚣张，大喊大叫，就像是获胜有理似的。正在为难张惶之际，忽然见一个非常肥胖而高大的和尚，挺着大腹嘻哈而来，见此情景便将钟馗从地上扶将起来，问道：“伏魔将军，为何这样狼狈?”钟馗说：“相隔不过几十年，想不到现在的阳世之鬼居然如此难捉!”和尚说：“不妨，让我替你捉来。”这和尚便对众鬼哈哈一笑，张开巨口咕噜一声，把众鬼全部吞到了大肚内。钟馗大惊道：“师父，你实在是神通广大!”和尚笑道：“亏你还是伏魔将军，不知道现在阳世的恶鬼，做鬼的花样和伎俩比以前更多，也更难缠，与他们论不得道理，讲不得人情，只管用大肚皮装了就是了!”
寓言解读
社会丑恶现象复杂多变，在社会转轨变型时期，各种“鬼”更是各显“鬼”通，不仅危害社会，而且与法纪巧妙周旋，败坏风气，气焰嚣张。为了社会的安宁和进步，对“鬼”绝不能容忍、姑息和宽恕，必须作针锋相对的斗争，才能制服恶鬼，为人民造福。

??国民间故事：钟馗嫁妹《钟馗嫁妹》是北昆老艺人有“活钟馗”之称的侯玉山(1893—1996代表作，也是京剧武净乃至武生常演的`戏。钟馗造型独特，将肩和臀部垫起，身形显得高大魁梧，但舞蹈却妩媚多姿，对比鲜明成趣，加之众小鬼翻腾雀跃，像一幅活动的民间年画。
剧情概要：终南进士钟馗进京赴试，误入鬼窟而毁容。金殿上皇帝见其丑陋，因而落第。钟馗羞归故里，触阶而死(死后被玉帝封为斩祟之神，遗体被同窗学友杜平葬埋。钟馗为报埋骨之恩，将小妹嫁与杜平，并亲率众小鬼送往杜家。
历史本无钟馗其人。据说一日唐明皇染病，昼卧榻上梦见一小鬼偷杨玉环的香囊和玉笛。忽见一大鬼虬髯黑面，插笏执剑，自称终南山进士钟馗，捉住小鬼吃下肚去。明皇惊醒，忙请大画家吴道子画梦中所见钟馗。吴道子画好，明皇一看与梦中一般无二，竟疑吴道子也做了同样的梦。
自此钟馗的画像广为流传，人们将它挂于门庭以趋鬼避邪，《乌盆记》中甚至图财害命的赵大家中也有一幅。

曾子是一个有名的孝子，他从来不惹母亲生气，对母亲知寒问暖，十分体贴。母亲也爱他，视若掌上明珠。
有一天，曾子要离开家乡到齐国去。他离别母亲说：
“我要到齐国去，望母亲在家里多保重身体，我一办完公事就回来。”
母亲对他说：
“我儿出去，各方面要多加小心，说话做事，千万注重，不要违犯人家齐国的一切规章制度。”
曾子说：
“母亲放心就是了，儿子一定遵命。”
曾子走后，母亲每日在窗前织布，经常抬头向窗外觇望，盼望儿子在齐国平安无事，早日回来。
曾子到齐国不久，齐国有个和他同名同姓的人，打架斗殴***死了人，被官府抓了起来。
曾子的一个同乡，听到这个消息，也不问个清楚，就跑去告诉曾子的母亲说：
“了不得啦，曾子在齐国***死人了。”
曾子的母亲听了这个消息，不慌不忙地回答说：
“不可能，我的儿子是干不出这等事来的。”
那位同乡，因为自己也是听来的消息，又没有把情况弄清楚，听曾子的母亲这么一说，也觉得拿不出什么根据，便半信半疑地走了。
他走后，曾子的母亲仍然安心织布，心里没有半点疑虑。
过了不大一会儿，又有一位邻居跑来，慌慌张张他说，
“曾子闯下大乱子了，他在齐国***了人啦。”
曾子的母亲仍然没一点儿惊慌的样子，一面织布，一面说：
“不要听信谣言，曾子不会***人的，你放心吧。”
那人很认真地说：
