在公元前655年，晋国派使者到虞国，送上一匹千里马和一对名贵的玉碧，说她们要去虢国，灭了他们，让虞君借给他们一条道儿，虞君瞧了瞧他们送的宝贝，连连答应：“可以可以！”大夫宫之奇拦住他说：“虢国和我们相互帮助，如果把他们国灭了，我们也保不住。”虞君不听，把道借给了他们，晋国使者灭了虢国，一顺手把虞国也灭了，取回了千里马和玉璧。
晋国的晋献公给虞君一所房子，另外送他一副车马和一对玉碧，晋献公还要重用百里奚，但百里奚宁可做俘虏，也不要做晋国的官。

书中有一身武艺，办事周到的颍考叔；有文武双全，细心胆大的曹刿；有才华横溢，抱负远大的百里溪；有任人为贤，合并诸候的齐桓公，还有卓越的政治家管仲和知贤荐贤的鲍叔牙。让我印象最深刻的是那管鲍之交。管仲从小就和鲍叔牙是朋友，长大了又一起做生意，一块儿打仗。因为家境贫困，管仲总是占鲍叔牙的便宜。有人说管仲“揩油”，可鲍叔牙说：“管仲家里穷，我和他是朋友，我乐意多给他一些。”到了战场上，管仲进攻时，能在后则后，退兵时，能在前则前。人说管仲“贪生怕死”，鲍叔牙却说“管仲很勇敢，他是为了家里的老母亲而这样做。”正是由于鲍叔牙对管仲的.相知相惜，他的行为感动了管仲，也感动了后人。每当读到这里，我常为鲍叔牙的这种宽广的胸襟和知人善任的高尚品质而感动，他不计较个人私利，知贤荐贤，竭力举荐管仲，执掌齐国政事，自己甘居下位。管仲才有了用武之地，辅佐齐桓公称霸天下，名垂千史。鲍叔牙对管仲的知交知心，令管仲不得不言：“生我者父母，知我者鲍子也！”想想古今中外，很多人为了自己获得更多的利益，欺骗朋友，出卖朋友，甚至是最好的朋友。知音是何等难求啊！
