可是卡蒂只有六年级，16岁的瑞克不会听她的.话。“万一咱们需要游泳的话，至少你参加了游泳队。”瑞克脸上闪过一丝笑意。卡蒂今年遇到一位新的游泳教练，名叫佛理特，队员们都叫他“舰队先生”。
帆船在风中摇摆，雨点开始倾泻到船板上。一股强风刮来，扫过帆船，把卡蒂吹进了冰冷的湖里，随后被风撕下的一大块帆布盖在头上。卡蒂抓住上面的帆布，奋力去推。但用力的结果只是让她沉下水中，靠救生衣的浮力她才升上水面。帆布如同一片薄冰困住了她。
卡蒂沉住气四下观察，当碎裂的帆布漂动时，只见右侧露出一小块敞开的水面。在水中要放松，让水来帮助你。舰队先生的话语回荡在她的脑海中。卡蒂强迫自己放松，让身体漂浮着，然后用尽了最后的力气游到那个地方，挣扎着把头露出水面。这是她平生最畅快的呼吸。
“卡蒂，这边来！”瑞克站在甲板上，拼命招呼着。卡蒂用狗爬式泳姿游近船体，瑞克赶忙拉上卡蒂。我还活着！卡蒂心里想，谢谢您，舰队先生。
