车夫驾着马车，载着虢国国君逃到荒郊野外，国君又渴又饿垂头丧气，车夫赶紧取过车上的食品袋，送上清酒、肉脯和干粮，让国君吃喝。国君感到奇怪，车夫哪来的这些食物呢?于是他在吃饱喝足后，便擦擦嘴问车夫：
“你从哪里弄来这些东西呢?”
车夫回答说：“我事先准备好的。”
国君又问：“你为什么会事先做好这些准备呢?”
车夫回答说：“我是专替大王您做的准备，以便在逃亡的路上好充饥、解渴呀。”
国君不高兴地又问：“你知道我会有逃亡的这一天吗?”
车夫回答说：“是的，我估计迟早会有这一天。”
国君生气了，不满地说：“既然这样，为什么过去不早点告诉我?”
车夫说：“您只喜欢听奉承的话。如果是提意见的话，哪怕再有道理您也不爱听。我要给您提意见，您一定听不进去，说不定还会把我处死。要是那样，您今天便会连一个跟随的人也没有，更不用说谁来给您吃的喝的了。”
国君听到这里，气愤至极，紫涨着脸指着车夫大声吼叫。
车夫见状，知道这个昏君真是无可救药，死到临头还不知悔改。于是连忙谢罪说：“大王息怒，是我说错了。”
两人都不说话，马车走了一程，国君又开口问道：“你说，我到底为什么会亡国而逃呢?”
车夫这次只好改口说：“是因为大王您太仁慈贤明了。”
国君很感兴趣地接着问：“为什么仁慈贤明的国君不能在家享受快乐，过安定的日子，却要逃亡在外呢?”
车夫说：“除了大王您是个贤明的人外，其他所有的国君都不是好人，他们嫉妒您，才造成您逃亡在外的。”
国君听了，心里舒服极了，一边坐靠在车前的横木上，一边美滋滋地自言自语说：“唉，难道贤明的君主就该如此受苦吗?”他头脑里一片昏昏沉沉，十分困乏地枕着车夫的腿睡着了。
这时，车夫总算是彻底看清了这个昏庸无能的虢国的国君，他觉得跟随这个人太不值得。于是车夫慢慢从国君头下抽出自己的腿，换一个石头给他枕上，然后离开国君，头也不回地走了。
最后，这位亡国之君死在了荒郊野外，被野兽吃掉了。
