小蜗牛回到家，拿起了锹，在他的小花园里，挖地、施肥、浇水。在小蜗牛的精心照料下，种子发芽了，慢慢地长成了小树苗。
这时，两只黄鹂鸟飞来了，她们嘻嘻哈哈地嘲笑小蜗牛说：“哈，就凭你的小树苗，怎能和苍天大树相比呢？我看你还是趁早把它砍了当柴火烧吧！”小蜗牛反驳道：“那又怎么样啊，苍天大树不都是小树苗长大的吗？”黄鹂鸟说：“这么小的树苗，我看啊，还没等它长成苍天大树，你就被急死了！”说完，黄鹂鸟飞走了。
小蜗牛非常勤奋地干活，一年过去了，两年过去了，在小蜗牛的`精心培育下，小树苗一天天的长高了，还开出了一朵朵粉红色的小花。花香引来了许多蜜蜂来采蜜。一转眼到了丰收的季节，小蜗牛的苹果树结满了又红又大的苹果。小蜗牛望着这些果实乐得合不拢嘴。
这一天，那两只黄鹂鸟又飞来了，她们落在了这棵苹果树上。说：“哇，这么粗壮的苹果树，果实也又大又红，真的比小蜗牛的小树苗好上几千倍呢！”正在这时，小蜗牛出来浇水，和两只黄鹂鸟碰了个正着。黄鹂鸟说：“蜗牛老弟，这棵苹果树可比你的那棵好吧？这上面的苹果又大又红的。哎，对了，你怎么不在家照顾你的小树苗，跑这里来玩呀？”小蜗牛笑笑说：“嗨，黄鹂鸟大姐，你还不知道吧！这就是我的那棵苹果树呀！”
两只黄鹂鸟睁大了眼睛：“啊，这是真的吗？”她们非常惭愧，再也不敢像以前那么嚣张了：“蜗牛老弟，我们以后再也不嘲笑你了！我们要学习你的耐心和坚持不懈的精神！”
