因为老舍家境贫寒，自幼体弱多病。20多岁开始练习武术。有一年，老舍患了背痛的病，他决心加强锻炼。于是他拜济南著名拳手为师，开始系统学习武功。他先后学了少林拳、太极拳、五行棍等，并购置了刀、枪、剑、戟等器械。

记得有一次，在一个黑漆漆的夜晚，我发烧到了40°。妈妈发现了，立刻把我抱起来送进医院的儿童诊室里。当时儿童诊室只有一位值班医生，那位医生穿着一件白大褂，一头乌黑的头发，长着一双炯炯有神的大眼睛和一个大嘴巴。
