以前，常将文人称为“喝墨汁的”，意思是读书写作无数，终日笔不离手常常用墨，那墨汁用量像被他喝掉了似的。现在此说渐少，因为写作者绝少研上一砚徽墨，挥笔在宣纸上写蝇头小楷了，甚至用灌满胶囊的自来水笔写作的人都已成历史。不过，偶尔有人将有较高文化的写家或学者仍称“喝过墨水的”。
这个形象的说法，在古代却曾经是真事呢!
历史记载，南北朝时的北齐有明文的法律规定，儒生在时成绩非常糟糕者，要被罚喝墨汁。引习延续了不少朝代，虽然罚喝墨汁可能激励了某些考生再做努力，但是，时有发生因罚喝墨汁太多使落选考生生病甚至死亡事件。到了隋朝，皇上恩典，颁布罚喝墨汁减量，《隋书·仪礼志》记载，凡文理不通、不精或书写潦草而没考上的，罚喝墨汁一升。原来在此之前，罚喝墨汁是一斗(一斗等于十升呢!文弱书生们怎么受得了!
唐朝进此恶习才彻底改变。唐太宗没做皇帝时也曾要考试晋官，但一想到考不上要罚喝墨水，轻则喝病，重能喝死，只好打了退堂鼓。他当上太唐皇帝后，觉得此法害人不浅，不仅是弄病或是害死书生那么简单，而是令更多的有识之士望考试而生畏，严重耽误了国家选拔人才。唐太宗宣布废除罚渴墨水陋习，书生们解除了思想压力，纷纷应试，为唐朝的兴旺做出了巨大的贡献!

英子原在一所重点中学念书，因为是重点中学，竟争非常强烈。上次英子退了6名。当英子把成绩单拿给妈妈时，妈妈的脸色大变，可什么也没说。英子哭了。几天后，英子要订牛奶，妈妈却说：“就你还喝牛奶?你怎么喝也是这点水平?真正上清华北大的都不一定喝牛奶。反正你也不缺营养。”英子哭了。“哭什么哭!要喝下次考试就进前10名。”妈妈的.话像尖刀一样刺痛了英子的心。英子不知为什么，就是爱喝牛奶。英子提前一年入学，比她的同学小一岁，不论体力还是智力都不如她的同学。但英子经过努力，是班上26名。英子又哭了，她发誓一定要进前10名。
英子开始每天苦读到凌晨2点，还经常熬夜，眼皮打架时，就喝杯咖啡。一个月下来，英子的成绩直线上升。期末考终于到了，考试前一天，英子刚刚打开课本，忽然感到一阵眩晕，眼前一黑就倒在书桌旁。
等英子醒来时，发现自己已经躺在医院里了。妈妈和医生再说什么。英子凑过去听。
“大夫，求求你救救英子吧!她是我们家的希望啊!”那是妈妈的声音。还带着哭腔。
“不行，没有骨髓。” …… 妈妈回来了，英子喝着牛奶。对妈妈说：“妈妈你要是早让我喝牛奶就好了!”
