summer can be very hot in southern taiwan where the temperature usually goes up to 32"c or more. because of the heat it is a trying experience to go to school or do anything else in a place that is not air-conditioned. also because of this i stay at home most of the time during the summer vacation and only occasionally go to the beach to plunge myself into the cool water as a way to keep my body less sticky.

actually i like swimming and think nothing is more refreshing than a swim. in the summer vacation that has just ended i went swimming many times with my classmates and we all had a good time. this summer vacation, however, was not spent entirely in seeking fun. as a second-year senior student i had to prepare myself for the college entrance examinations that were only a year away. in other words, i must find time to study, too.

so i divided my time between work and play during the summer vacation and derived much benefit from this arrangement.

even if such a catastrophe would not happen, there would be a great temperature difference on the two hemispheres of the earth, and the four seasons of the year would no longer occur because a day and a night would be as long as a whole year instead of 24 hours. all this would greatly affect the life of human beings, imals and plants and that would cause worse results than anything imaginable.

我家最近可热闹了，因为来了一位神秘嘉宾——美丽的小金鱼“公主”。

小金鱼可漂亮了。扁圆的身体，浑身上下都是高贵可爱的金黄色，圆圆的头上有一双水灵灵的大眼睛和一张精巧的小嘴。舞裙一样的大尾巴总是在身后轻轻地摆动着，宛如一位美丽的公主在翩翩起舞，动人极了，所以我给它取名“公主”。

我非常喜爱公主。每天一放学，我就急忙回家。我把书包一扔，就给公主换水，喂食。我还常和公主聊天，它一见到我就欢快的摇尾巴。

这天我作业写得很迟，写完后就去看公主，此时，我眼前的情景让我心头一震。

公主一动不动，见到我不摇尾巴也不吐泡泡了，它那美丽的大尾巴无力的垂着，眼睛睁得很大很大，一点神也没有像是要死了。我心里很紧张，我安慰自己说：“公主不会死的，只是饿了，生我气了。”于是我拿了一些鱼食放到水里，可公主看也不看一眼，尾巴还是无力的垂着。这下可完了，我越想越害怕，连忙到妈妈身边，说：“妈妈，小，小金鱼，快，快要死了，救，救，救救它吧!”妈妈听了，连忙走到了鱼缸前观察了一阵，笑了起来，说：“小金鱼没死，在睡呢!它没有眼皮，就只好睁眼睡觉了。”

我听妈妈一说，才平静了下来。

后来，我查阅了百科全书，知道了：鱼也会睡觉。因为，鱼没有眼睑，所以不能闭上眼睛。这样看上去好象它从不睡觉似的。大部分的鱼在睡觉时，只不过是在水中保持不动的宁静状态。就象人睡觉时那样，鱼就是用这种方式使它们的身体得到休息。

原来，小金鱼是睁眼睡觉的。
