中国是使用动物入药最多的国家，药用动物资源丰富。共计有可入药的各种无脊椎动物约170种，鱼类90余种，爬行类也有数十种，哺乳类约70种，中国的麝香产量名列世界首位。
工业用动物资源可分为制裘及制革工业用动物、香料工业动物、鲸脂类动物、紫胶和白蜡类动物、羽绒与装饰品动物五类。中国约有120种裘皮兽，年产量在万张；世界四大动物名香（麝香、灵猫香、龙涎香及河狸香）在中国均有出产，其中龙涎香和河狸香产量较少，麝香多用于制药，灵猫香的产量基本可以自给自足；鲸脂是重要的工业原料，中国共有鲸类14种，如江豚、抹香鲸、座头鲸、长须鲸等，均可出产鲸脂；产于中国云南、西藏和台湾的`紫胶虫可生产紫胶，年产紫胶原胶达4000吨。产于四川、贵州和云南的白蜡虫能分泌白蜡；天鹅及野鸭绒质轻柔软，保温性能好，可加工成绒衣绒被，具有很高的经济价值，中国是世界羽绒生产大国；各种飞禽的羽翎、尾羽等，还可以制成精美的装饰品和工艺品。
珍贵特产动物指具有重要经济价值或学术价值的特产动物种类。中国共有大熊猫、金丝猴、白暨豚、鸳鸯、褐马鸡、扬子鳄、大鲵等珍贵特产动物数十种。
中国的实验用动物种类很多，主要有小白鼠、大白鼠、家兔、猕猴、眼虫、变形虫、草履虫、中国鲎等，被广泛使用在医疗、医学研究活动中。
观赏动物资源包括鸟类中的各种鹤类、天鹅、红腹锦鸡、绿孔雀、绯胸鹦鹉、犀鸟、鹭类、相思鸟、画眉、黄鹂等种类。哺乳类中包括各种猿、猴、鹿类、熊、虎、豹、云豹、大熊猫、小熊猫、象等。此外还包括有一些濒临灭绝的物种。
中国的害虫害兽的天敌动物资源众多，包括有食虫昆虫，害虫寄生蜂；各种青蛙和蟾蜍；食鼠的蛇类；食虫鸟类和猫头鹰类；食虫蝙蝠和许多中小型食肉兽。这些动物在森林或农田生态系统中有着不可估量的积极作用。
此外，中国还拥有许多其它用途的动物资源，许多媒介昆虫在生命活动中给一些靠虫媒授粉的作物带来丰产。原生动物如眼虫，可作为有机污染的指示动物；不少低等动物在净化水质、保护环境方面也有重要作用。多种浮游动物、底栖动物是经济鱼类的铒料。多种食用价值不高的海洋动物可以用来加工成禽畜饲料。
近年来，中国政府逐渐意识到动物资源在自然环境和国家经济的重要作用，制定了一系列法律法规以保护国家动物资源，拯救濒危物种，严厉打击非法偷猎行为，并加大宣传力度，在社会上树立起保护动物的良好风气。
