“轰！”顿时，天上乌云密布，电闪雷鸣。倾盆大雨从空中倒了下来。淋湿了马蒂尔德的衣裳。
听了佛来思节夫人的话，玛蒂尔德如被冰雪，她没有再说一句话，一个人失魂落魄的往回走。
回到家，看见丈夫，就大哭起来，边哭边叫：“亲爱的，你知道吗？那串项链是假的！你知道吗？那串项链是假的。”路瓦栽不知怎么回事，迷惑不解地问：“怎么了，亲爱的？什么是假的？”路瓦栽夫人解释道：“就是我从佛来思节夫人那借的那条项链，是假的，是假的！”并把路上的情形告诉了他。“啊？！”路瓦栽先生不相信，于是他找到佛来思节夫人证实这件事。 结果这件事是真的。
马蒂尔德十分失落，整天躺在床上想着什么。路瓦栽看她如此的伤心，总是想办法让她开心，并开导她。过了几天，马蒂尔德突然从床上蹦起来，兴奋的对丈夫说：“我想通了！是这串假项链使我懂得了生活，让我在这十年里，没有虚度光阴，过得充实而快乐。所以，我要感谢它。要更努力的生活。”
路瓦栽先生很高兴，于是他们夫妻俩都振作了起来。靠自己的双手，打拼出一片属于自己的天空。又过了5年，他们家经济状况明显改变，马蒂尔德过上了以前只能在梦中才能过的生活。并为路瓦栽生出了一对龙凤胎。从此，一家人过上了幸福的生活！

一天，玛蒂尔德在街上遇到仍旧年轻、美丽的让娜，知道了项链的真相后，惊讶不已！福雷斯蒂埃得知玛蒂尔德的遭遇后，心中顿生怜惜之情，决定回去将价值三万六法郎的项链送回。
玛蒂尔德接过项链，小心翼翼的放进黑缎子盒里，藏了起来。尽管以后的日子仍然是个未知数，艰苦的日子仍然会围绕着他们，但马蒂尔德仍不舍卖掉那条价值不菲的项链，直到
一天，一位来自英国的百万富翁为了给女儿准备生日礼物，特地来到法国，找寻那条在法国限量制造的钻石项链。玛蒂尔德的邻居肯德基听说了这么一回事，你可知道他是玛丁尔街最三八的，他当然也知道了玛蒂尔德就拥有那么项链。他决定告知罗瓦赛夫妇。
亲爱的罗瓦赛夫人，你可知你那条钻石项链如今涨价，升到了七万法郎了吗？
玛蒂尔德瞪大了双眼，结巴地问：：什么？不会吧？快告诉我是怎么一回事！肯德基将详细的经过告诉了她，要知道，七万法郎足可以让他们一家一辈子无忧了！
这一夜，罗瓦赛夫妇一夜没合眼，商量着如何是好，但更多的是在盘算着这一笔钱
第二天，罗瓦赛夫妇带着项链赶到富翁所住的旅馆，庆幸的事，那位富翁居然答应了夫妇俩对他的要求。一口价，八万法郎，我们买时可不止这个价咧！好吧，一手交货，一手交钱。
发了，发了，整整八万啊！他们夫妇俩坐在床上疯了似的抓狂着。亲爱的，我准备明天买一套裙子，哎，忘了，还要一双**牌的高根鞋，呃，还有
老板，帮我把那一套浅格子裙包起来！ 一千法郎，不用找了。正当他们提着裙子走出门时，听到店住喊道：先生，你给的可是假币！罗瓦赛尔夫妇吃了一惊，这究竟这是怎么一回事？？
那天他们夫妇俩所见的富翁是肯德基聘请来的，至于那条项链，呵呵，聪明的肯德基已用项链换走了那七万法郎，那个富翁也早已飞回了英国庆祝他女儿的生辰。当然，夫妇俩并不知道这一切！
也许这是早有安排的。罗瓦塞尔安慰道，尽管天真的玛蒂尔德仍旧每天发着美梦，但，这才是原本属于他们的、真真切切的生活。

弗来思节夫人感动极了，抓住她的手说：“哎！我可怜的玛蒂尔德！可是我那一挂是假的，至多只值500法郎！”
“我知道！”她说：“在这十年间我也曾想过，发现了很多可疑的地方。但是我想事情已经发生了，就坦然面对吧。正好也可以磨练一翻我的意志。太太，那间钻石项链带在我身上，现在看来是不美丽了，就把它送给你吧，也当给自己一个教训吧。”她一口气说了这么多，想诵读一样，眼神却不动流露出委屈的光来，她泪留满面，看着眼前苍老的女人都与自己有关，心里充满懊悔。
就在这时玛蒂尔德说：“朋友，我能再见一下那条项链吗，今晚我要参加一个朋友的聚会，觉得不体面，另外再借你家的轿车，行吗？”
她的.朋友爽快的答应了。带玛蒂尔德回了家。皆好后有给了玛蒂尔德3万法郎作为补偿。
玛蒂尔德欣然离开了。拂来思节望了她远去的背影，心想：这真是一个善良的女人啊。
5天后的一个清晨，晨报上刊出一条新闻：骗子玛蒂尔德骗走拂来思节夫人的珍贵宝物，至今还在逃亡中。望知情者配合警方缉拿逃犯。
