鳄鱼爬到河边上，一只水鹬(yu飞来给它剔牙齿，这在它们是习以为常的事。鳄鱼安静地伏着，半闭着眼睛，张开口，水鹬用它的尖利的嘴，轻巧地剔除鳄鱼牙缝里面的残渣，啄掉牢固地叮在牙龈上的水蛭(zhi。这时候，鳄鱼总是激动得眼泪双流。
“我亲爱的朋友，”鳄鱼流着泪水说，“你给了我很大的帮助，啄掉了我牙缝里那些该死的水蛭。给我啄吧，我不会薄待你的。我没有忘记在牙缝里给你留下一些食物的残渣，让你吃得很饱。我们的'友谊是牢不可破的，我们的关系是建立在真正平等互利的基础上的。”

水鹬小心翼翼地伸过头去。鳄鱼用非常利索的动作，一张口就把水鹬衔住了，连脚尖尾巴也没有露出一点在嘴外面。它不动声色地闭着嘴巴，并不担心它的朋友会有什么挣扎或抗议，它知道，它们的友谊保证了不会发生这一切。现在它只是用它的慈悲的眼睛，十分警觉地侦视着四周，希望不致惊动可能同它合作的新伙伴。
