随着工业的日益发展，酸雨的危害更多的受到人们的关注，它和“温室效应”、“臭氧层破坏”被称为人类面临的三大灾难性挑战。那么，酸雨是如何形成的？酸雨的危害又有那些呢？
酸雨是由于地球上燃煤或燃油产生的二氧化硫和氮氧化合物气体排放到大气中化而产生的。这些酸性氧化物遇到空气中的水蒸气，便结合成云雾状酸，下雨时同雨水一起下落，就形成了酸雨。酸雨的主要成分是硫酸以及硝酸，也就是指pH值小于5.6的'雨雪或其他形式的大气降水。
酸雨是工业高度发展而出现的副产品，它的污染也是世界性的。目前，整个欧洲都在降酸雨，俄罗斯西部地区的酸雨pH值竟达到了酸雨也逐渐开始席卷亚洲地区，我国的酸雨危害就特别严重。我国目前酸雨区域约占国土面积的30%，主要分布在长江以南地区、长江下游地区。这些地区中，平均每三次降雨就有一次酸雨。
酸雨破坏水土环境，它可以破坏大面积的森林和农作物。据报道，欧洲和北美一些国家的森林面积受酸雨危害率高达我国南方的酸雨区也出现类似的情况：重庆地区50%的松树枯死；峨眉山金顶冷杉的死亡率高达酸雨会危害植物的表皮以及角质层，使植物的抗病虫害能力减弱。
酸雨对水生生物的危害也很大，它能使许多河湖水质酸化，导致许多对酸敏感的水生生物种群灭绝。欧洲、北美的许多湖泊因酸雨危害，已经变成死湖。
除了这些以外，酸雨还会使土壤酸化，土壤中的钙、镁等营养成分被酸溶解，使土壤中的水分流失；酸雨对建筑物和金属的腐损也非常严重；它还会影响人和动物的身体健康，会引起结膜炎、咽喉炎、皮炎等病症。
由上述可以看出，酸雨的危害日趋严重，如果我们还不采取行动的话，将带来无法挽回的损失！所以，我们现在必须从根本上消除酸雨，减少废气排放、发展新技术、开发新能源。
