进化论的创始人达尔文曾经这样推测：流泪是某种进化的“遗迹”，与进化过程中的生存竞争没有关系。达尔文认为，对于人体来说，眼泪本身是没有意义的“副产品”。美国人类学家阿希莱蒙塔戈的观点与达尔文截然相反。他认为，流眼泪对人体具有益处，这种益处在进化中有一定影响，因而能通过自然选择被一代一代地保存下来，人类会流泪正是适者生存的结果。他举例说：眼泪中含有溶菌酶，这是人体的一种自卫物质，它能保护鼻咽黏膜不被细菌感染。
