贫困穷苦，身无分文。他独坐于河岸边，钓于河之上。面对一汪清河，引出无限感慨。感叹命运的不公，生活的摧残。而他，无衣耐寒，无粮充饥。
忽然，一位面相和蔼，年事已高的老妇向他走来，俯下身，用干瘦枯脊的手抚摸着他竟比自己还要黝黑、瘦枯的面庞。拥有这样的皮肤的竟是一位年轻人。老妇人心在颤抖，这该是生活多么的艰苦啊！老妇人望见他那消瘦的面庞，无神的眼睛，实在于心不忍。
老妇人端出一碗白粥，些许野菜，与他充饥。粗茶淡饭，却比山珍海味更来得美味。一碗粥罢，他眼角不禁滑落出泪水，抱拳跪于妇人跟前，言语凝咽，道：“今日之恩，他日得志之时必将重谢。”老妇人却扶起他：“今日之恩，举手之劳，不必记挂于心。将相本无种，男儿当自强，你应自强自立。”
后来，他随项梁反秦，转归汉王刘邦，经萧何举荐，被封为大将军。他征战沙场，屡建奇功。但是，他没有忘。没有忘当时那位老妇人，他人生成功之时，便以一千两黄金馈赠于当年那位对自己有恩的老妇人。这便是历史上的“一饭千金”。古人说得好，“受恩勿忘，知恩报本”。当初老妇人的一点恩，对于韩信。不仅是一顿饭的饥饱，又是精神上的点醒。如果老妇人当初只立于河岸边，没有赠以韩信那一顿饭，试问，史上还会有韩信大将军的威名吗？
韩信功成之时，他没有忘恩，而是报恩，虽然这恩情只是一顿粗茶淡饭，但他却以更多甚于这饭价值的黄金，赠于老妇，报以恩情。
这样一个小故事，立于历史长河之中，这其中，折现的不正是我们中华民族几千年流传的文化，品质和精神吗？中华民族勤勤恳恳，舍已而为人，助人为乐。受恩惠的人，也知恩而图报。
“恩”，“因心”，由心发为人送去帮助，由心发回馈别人的恩情。这一个恩字，是伟大中华民族千年来所传承的一个字。
