然而，尽管睡眠对每个人是如此的重要，但不同的人对睡眠的需要并不相同，一般说来，女性比男性所需要的睡眠时间略多一些，有些人每夜只睡3~4小时就清醒、精神饱满，但另一些人则每夜必需睡10~12小时才能解乏，否则白天会头昏脑胀、无精打采、工作难以为继，历史上有些名人以睡得少而著称，如拿破仑每夜最多睡4小时，但也有以好睡闻名的，所以就睡眠时间长短而言，每个人的要求都不会一样。
所以，专家提醒：失眠的病人最好是自己和自己不失眠的时候比较，而不要和别人比较，目前对健康的成年人来讲，每夜平均睡7~9小时就已经足够了，睡眠对每个人来讲，都是绝对必需的、不可或缺的生活需要，因此，如果感觉长期的睡眠不足、睡眠质量不好就要尽早治疗，以免对身体的健康产生影响。
