这个洋娃娃的名字叫做杜莉，他在镜子里照见了自己，就非常骄傲，对自己赞美不已。他决定自己除国王的的女儿以外，不属于任何人。他唯一的希望就是住在王宫里，愿意在那里侍候国王。

但是，怎样去劝国王来到圣诞老人的店里购买这个洋娃娃呢?或者，在下次的节日里，用什么方法使圣诞老人把它赠给过往的女儿呢？那种方法是不容易想出来的！在那些长长的日子里，杜莉空洞的头脑想了好久，可是一点儿办法都想不出。

杜莉不能事先逃走……幸亏，晚上那雪橇在荒野里跑了好久。就要进城了，雪橇恰巧从王宫前经过，洋娃娃立刻想出一个主意，他滚下雪橇，跌在柔软的雪上，正巧对着王宫的大门。那大门是专供国王进出的。杜莉的这个主意不坏……可是，不幸得很，这地方虽然没有普通的百姓来散步，但那些野狗是忽视法律的。洋娃娃跌在雪上不久，有一只野狗来觅食，看见这个不幸的洋娃娃，就衔了逃开，仿佛一个窃贼偷了东西的样子。

另外有几只恶狗，也在大门前游荡，他们以为自己的同伴找到了一件好东西，要和他争夺一下……不到一小时，杜莉被他们扯成了一束破绸，弄得不成样子，颜色也看不清楚，龌龊得连它们也讨厌她，把它抛在一条阴沟里。

洋娃娃被抛弃在阴沟里之后，从此听不到被人家谈起他了。

有一天早晨，一个女孩子上学去，经过那里，把这个丑陋的残物拾了起来。巧的很，这个女孩子就是圣诞老人想把杜莉送给他的人。几天以后杜莉已经被那个女孩子洗干净了，从头到脚穿上了新衣服，头发也梳得整整齐齐。他又变成一个十分像样的洋娃娃了，并且他原来地娇气也完全消失了……
