说到纸的历史，那可就长了。在西汉前，人们以绵帛、竹木为书写材料。但绵帛贵重、竹木笨重，都不是最好的书写材料。当时的养蚕户发现，将蚕丝飘絮后，席上的残絮便形成一层纤维薄片，晒干后即可书写。这就是纸的雏形。后来，蔡伦改进了纸，原料不单单是蚕丝，还有棉、树皮，甚至破渔网也行。他还总结出了一套较定形的制造流程，既提高了纸的质量，又降低了它的成本，纸开始被人们接受。
