小灰鲤安慰小稻秧们说：“好朋友，别着急，我们来帮你们的忙。” 小灰鲤急急忙忙的游开去，一边游一边大声嚷： “鲤鱼弟兄们!水藻在欺侮小稻秧啦!咱们快去帮忙呀!” 许多小鲤鱼都游过来了。他们张着大嘴，“咔嚓咔嚓”吃起水藻来。水藻吓得索索发抖，小稻秧们可笑得前仰后合地说：“小灰鲤真厉害呀，真像铲草机!”
欺侮小稻秧的'水藻给消灭干净了。小稻秧越长越结实了。他们挺直了身子，摆动着长长的叶子，一阵风吹过，“悉里索罗”直响。小稻秧已经长成真正的水稻啦!头上都长出谷穗来了。小灰鲤每天早晨游近水稻，快活地招呼他们说：“早哇，朋友们!” 水稻在微风中轻轻地摇晃着身子，他们弯下腰来，也很亲热地说：“早哇，好朋友!” 可是有一天，小灰鲤看见水稻紧缩着身子，脸色焦黄焦黄的，满面愁容。

小灰鲤看了又气又恨，马上去和兄弟们商量。大家七嘴八舌谈起来： “一定要救水稻!” “咱们帮水稻消灭螟虫!” “对，吃螟虫去!”
小鲤鱼们伏在水里等候着，看到螟虫爬到靠近水面的稻根上，就赶过去把他吃掉。有的螟虫吐出丝，挂在空中随风飘荡，一不小心落到水面上来了。小鲤鱼也决不放过，一口把他吞下肚去。日子一天一天过去了。小鲤鱼吃着水稻田里的杂草和害虫，长得又肥又大。他们拉出来的粪，又作了水稻的肥料。水稻也长得又粗又壮，结了一穗一穗沉甸甸的谷粒。秋风轻轻地吹过，金黄的稻穗就“沙拉沙拉”唱起歌来。丰收的季节到了，收获的季节到了!农民伯伯拿着镰刀来收稻了。他们放去了稻田里的水，小灰鲤他们就沿着小沟，游到稻田旁边的永塘里。
一路上，金色的稻穗恋恋不舍地欢送他们： “再见，鲤鱼兄弟，谢谢你们的帮助!”
