儿子，你怎么这么高了，马上就要超过我了！父亲看着正坐在沙发上吃着零食的儿子，骄傲地说道。那当然了，我长得可快了，哪天，我就要超过家门口的小树。不信，我们就在门前的树上钉个钉子，明年再看看长高了多少。儿子不以然的说。
说干就干，父亲手里握了一把坚硬的小锤子，嘴里叼着一个闪着光芒、尖利的钉子，飞快的向树下走去，让儿子笔直地站在树下。儿子挺胸，抬头，一个立正，表情像一只小雄鸡一样神气十足，还高傲的把头轻轻仰了起来。此时正是金秋，树上的叶子缓缓飘下，落在地上，铺成一层厚厚的金地毯，一阵微风吹乱了儿子的'短发，更加显得不可一世。父亲用一种欣慰而略带狡黠的目光盯着儿子，脸上有一种窃喜的神情。他先用锤子抵在儿子的头上，并与树干相垂直，然后蹲下身子，轻轻把嘴里的钉子取出，如抽烟一般用两根手指夹住按在树干上，最后便用锤子小心翼翼地把钉子钉一半在树干里面，儿子则在一边仔细地看父亲干活。
冬天来了，冬雪覆盖了大地，万物披上了银色的时装，漫长的严冬即将来临了，父亲和儿子一起穿着厚厚实实的衣服，欢快地跑出了家，在这儿蓬松的雪地上奔跑，有时堆雪人，有时打雪仗，玩得不亦乐乎。不知不觉中，春天也如约而至，这个世界流光溢彩，氤氤氲氲。花儿竞相开放，鸟儿在枝头高声歌唱，小河解冻了，万物复苏了，连在冬日里黯然无光的小树也重新焕发出光彩，展现出了新的活力，一切都是那么的美好！
父亲与儿子一起站在树下，欣赏着抽出纸条的小树。父亲突然发现去年钉上去的铁钉，上面已锈迹斑斑。父亲让儿子站在上面去比一比，儿子便得意洋洋地站了上去。本以为早就超过了树上钉子的高度，可谁知，比原来矮了整整一大截，儿子得意的神情瞬间凝固了，努力踮起了脚尖，但还是不能够碰到钉子，便奇怪地问正在一旁哈哈大笑的爸爸：为什么我越长越矮了呢？父亲则笑眯眯地回答道：并不是你变矮了，而是小树长高了，要用发展的眼光看问题，而不能用固定思维看待问题。儿子听了，似懂非懂的点了点头，和爸爸一起回家了。
这句话，给了儿子许多帮助，使他深深地记在了脑海中。

一个秋高气爽的周末，父亲和儿子去公园散步。公园里秋姑娘把树叶染成了金色、红色。一阵秋风吹来，金黄的树叶像蝴蝶一样，翩翩起舞，飘飘洒洒，落满了一地。远远望去，像是一条黄金大道。
他们走到一棵小树前，儿子对父亲说：“爸爸，帮我量一下身高好吗？”“好的。”只见儿子挨着小树笔直地站着，爸爸在小树上留下一个标志，然后拿出钉子和锤子，蹲下身子，将钉子钉在小树上。儿子在父亲身后认真地看着。

冬去春来，小树冒出新芽，长得郁郁葱葱。父亲和儿子又去公园散步，他们来到小树前，想和去年量的.身高标志比一下。儿子站在小树旁一看，顿时大惊失色，他左思右想，抓耳挠腮，百思不得其解，忙问父亲：“我怎么比去年矮了许多？”父亲愣了一下，忽然想到了原因，笑着说：“儿子，不是你变矮了，而是小树长高了。小树是有生命的，它和你一样，都会长高。”
听了父亲的话，儿子茅塞顿开，终于明白了其中的道理。父子俩高高兴兴地回家了。
