在安仁县一个湖旁，湖面清澈见底，小鱼和小虾在水里游来游去。偶尔有一只红蜻蜓点过水面，使水面泛起一丝丝涟漪。这时诗人杨万里正走在湖旁的小路上。
忽然，一阵欢笑声打破了应有的宁静，杨万里仔细一看，原来是一叶渔船从远处驶来。船上两个可爱的孩子划着船：一个大概十五六岁，撑着乘船的竹竿;另一个好像是十岁的样子，用船桨划着船。
渐渐的起风了，“三儿，把伞打起来，起风了”“知道了。”三儿放下船桨，到里面搬出了两把椅子，一面坐下，一面打起了伞。杨万里想：这两个孩子一定是划累了，想休息一会吧!?可他渐渐注意到这两个孩子并没有划船，船却自己动起来了。
杨万里恍然大悟，原来他们并不是挡雨，而是借助风力使船动起来啊!

一天，蔚蓝的天空飘着几朵白云。翠绿的山边，小湖上漂着一叶小船，船里坐着两个小孩儿。他们正在讲故事。穿蓝衣的小孩津津有味地讲着：“有座山，山里有庙，庙里有两个和尚……”可是刚开了个头，红衣服小孩垂头丧气地说：“我都听过一百遍了，不要讲这个故事啦！”“那我们做什么？”那个顽童反问道。红衣小孩灵机一动，把竹篙和船桨收到船上，跑进船舱拿出一把雨伞，向着船头撑开。蓝衣小童见了，奇怪地问：“你为什么在大晴天撑伞呢？”“哈哈，我是用伞使风，不是用来遮头的。”原来两个孩子是希望伞使风让船前进，但最终船还是停止不前。这真是一个幼稚的想法，两个天真、可爱的孩子呀！”
