自信不是与生俱来的，人的自信也是可以慢慢培养的。美国华裔物理学家钱致榕曾讲述过一段他中学时代的故事：当时社会不稳定，社会风气不好，许多学生都不上进，考试作弊之风十分盛行。为了扭转这种局面，一位老师想了一个办法，他从300名学生中抽取了60位学生，组成了一个“荣誉班”。老师告诉那些同学，他们是全校最有前途的学生，将来每个人都会有成就。“荣誉班”的同学的积极性都被调动起来，对前途充满了自信，学习更刻苦了，成绩也越来越好。奇迹出现了，这个班的学生大多数都学有所成，有的人成了著名的学者、科学家。钱致榕回国拜访那位老师时，才知道“荣誉班”的学生只不过是从300名学生中随机抽取的普通学生。
