秦始皇为了防御匈奴进攻，征发大批人力修缮和增补燕、赵、秦三国北边的旧长城，将其连为一体，西起临洮，东至辽东，全长一万余里。后又派大将蒙恬率30万军队北伐匈奴，收复河套地区，并在那里设县，为进一步开拓西域奠定了基础。
在我心中，秦始皇是中国历史上一位叱咤风云富有传奇色彩的划时代人物，也是中国历史上第一个多民族中央集权制帝国的创立者。在中国历史上，消灭了封建领主制，开创了一个中央集权的封建专制主义新的历史时代。但是秦始皇也有做的不对的地方。
秦始皇为了强化专制统治，严刑峻法、横征暴敛，同时大修宫殿和坟墓。据说秦始皇所修的宫殿，关中三百，关外四百余，其中最有名的是阿房宫。又用刑徒七十二万人穿骊山作陵又大兴土木，给人民带来莫大的灾难。他还兴师动众，五次远途出巡，逢山刻石，以示不朽之功，又下令焚书坑儒。这些作为大幅度摧残并破坏了生产力的发展，造成“赭衣塞路、囹圄成市”的严重社会危机。秦始皇去世才1年，陈胜、吴广就在大泽乡揭竿而起，秦王朝仅存在15个春秋，就土崩瓦角、灰飞烟灭。
自古以来，对秦始皇的评价就褒贬不一。但纵观秦始皇的一生，对中国历史的发展起了巨大推动作用，实为中国历史上一位有作为的皇帝，功绩不可泯灭。
