影片实际上结构特别简单，就是讲一个立志于当作家的男主人公李钟秀偶遇到经久不见的女人——海美，他被这个女人所吸引，甚至着迷。而当海美旅行归来之后却带回了另外一个伴侣，本。本长相俊朗，优雅风趣，年纪不算大，开着保时捷跑车有着相当可观的财产。在女人的要求下，三个人时常见面。李钟秀尽管时觉窘迫，但也一一应付下来。一次三人聚会之后，海美失去了联系，如一阵雾气消散于松林中，毫无痕迹可寻。此后，多番举措都徒劳无果的李钟秀，决定从本身上寻求海美失踪的答案。
最后，李钟秀将本***害，并且烧毁。
影片与一般电影最大的区别是：它实际上没有一个完整的故事。它有些变化，这些变化依托于那个来了又消失的女人；它有一个出口，这个出口建立在结尾李钟秀***死本而燃起的那团火焰。但这都不算是一个故事，因为故事的话，它应当是有一种倾向性，应当有一种缓急得当的节奏，而在这部电影里面，它让一切就像是在两个画面里显示的手和脚，刻意省去了那种必要的连接，而形成一种并列。
一切都是重复基础上的即兴，电影中绝大多数段落不过是一个男性青年单调乏味的生活的横截面的并置。这种并置的设定，让人烦躁不安，就像远远地看一个人在一条小路上来来回回地走，来来回回地走，偶尔背对我们解决自己的生理需求。你像上帝一样窥探一个可怜的人的生活，然后还扪心自问，为什么要这样做呢？这种疑惑逐渐转变为一种焦虑。
尤其是在电影的后半段，一个小时的时间里，李钟秀只做了一件事情，就是确认。不停地确认，确认塑料大棚是否被烧毁，确认海美提到的那口枯井是否存在，确认喂养过的那只猫是否真实。确认自己的人生是否建立在无可把握的虚空之中。而在这之后呢？当本问及他是否想好写什么题材时，李钟秀答复道：我不知道，我觉得世界像谜一样。
他从他自己的生活里出不去了。一个人多大程度能从自己的生活里出去？
这种程度就像是一个人一生当中花很大一笔积蓄用于一次旅行一样。就像海美花光她所有的积蓄去非洲寻求意义。但一个人不必总是需要从自己的生活里出去。因为对于大部分人而言，生活作为牢笼虽然囚禁着你，但也保护着你。
李钟秀作为一个立志成为作家的青年人，在自己的笼子里准备做一番事业，有一天一个笼子外面的人走近，以一种目光看向他，并且问道：你想当作家吗？李钟秀不知道该说些什么，他木讷寡言，不善交际，而这也被走近的人当做一种别致的特色欣赏。就好像动物园里关着的沉默的大象，正因为它的庞大和迟钝，被游客询问：你可以站起来吗？李钟秀慢慢地觉察到了那种目光，慢慢地，我们发现他愤怒了。
电影结尾的处理：为什么男主人公李钟秀非要将本***死不可？
这里可以做两种解释：一种基于非现实层面，即李钟秀***死本的场景不过来自于他在小说中的虚构；第二种即现实层面，他确实***了本。我主要讲我对第二种想法的理解。
电影中海美提到小时候她曾落入一口枯井，是李钟秀发现她并救了她，然而这件事情李钟秀却不记得了。而根据电影后面其他人物的交代，我们可以得知在海美遇见李钟秀的`时候，尽管无任何说明，海美确实是陷入了个人的巨大的财务危机当中。
她看到了李钟秀，李钟秀也瞩目于她，可是海美明白李钟秀并没有能力救她；又来了一个人，一个有能力救海美的人：他被海美在井底黑暗中曼妙的舞姿所吸引，他给海美鼓掌，他早早看穿海美的困境，但是他情愿把这种困境连着海美一起当做风景来欣赏，也不施与救援。因为他明白他总会撇过脸去，而救援的代价过于巨大。
海美呢，她心里是如何悲哀的境况，愿意相救的人大概只能陪你去死，有能力相救的人，你不过是他手里一时炫耀把玩的器具。
李钟秀最后去见本，想就海美的事情说点什么，在聚会上参观过本现任女友的“表演”之后决定离开。走时本提及钟秀来的目的，钟秀告知本“现在不说也没有关系了”，而本似乎道出了钟秀烦恼的根源回答道：钟秀，你把一切都看得太认真了。
而本的死，其实也就在于这句话，李钟秀把这一切看得太认真了。
就像本提及他烧塑料大棚这件事，他大可不必当真；他大可忘记海美这件事情，重新开始生活，贫穷的贫乏的追逐所谓作家梦想的生活。而李钟秀千方百计地寻求海美，以及思考海美消失的原因，最后得出自己的结论。
什么结论？李钟秀认为，某种意义上，是他和本一起***死了海美。
李钟秀是那个见证过程，看起来无辜的人，因为他自身的无能为力，海美并未向他求救，他也并不知情。影片后面，当钟秀母亲过来找他借钱时，尽管对方看出了他的困境，他仍旧做出一副没关系我可以帮助你的姿态。海美明白，李钟秀是可以也愿意为她倾其所有的人，正因为这样，她才没有。而本在李钟秀看来，则是那个间接的残酷的凶手。
海美就像本口中提及到的塑料大棚，花时间精心挑选，浇上汽油，点燃火柴，然后欣赏壮烈的火焰。对于本而言，最有吸引力的地方便在于海美绝望的处境，本不可能选择救她。李钟秀最后***死本，并将其烧毁，则是一种淤积的生存之怒的释放。
