一对猴子兄弟他们非常和睦恩爱，老猴王年迈以高，它想在纵多的猴子当中选出一位能力者来接替它的王位，听此消息，所有的猴子都力争抢夺王位，只有猴子兄弟每天依然过着悠闲的生活。
老猴王出巡，看到这对猴子兄弟依然悠闲自在，毫不像其它猴子一样争抢王位，老猴王很奇怪，便叫猴子兄弟来问话，猴王说：“为什么其它猴子都觊觎王位，而你们却悠哉自然，难道你们不想当猴王么?”
猴子兄弟回答说：“尊敬的猴王，我们只知道安分守己、甘于清贫是美德。”
老猴王觉得兄弟俩谦卑，具有领导才能，于是决定把王位传给兄弟俩的其中一个，兄弟俩都彼此谦让不争不抢，老猴王看到非常感动。老猴王最终把王位让给了兄弟俩，兄弟俩都成为了猴王。
