我心里一边偷笑，一边蹑手蹑脚地下床，开房门，走到冰箱前，轻轻打开，因为第一次干这种事，我的心里好像有十五只水桶——七上八下的：要是老妈突然醒来不就完蛋了。顾不得多想，赶紧关上冰箱门，踮着脚走进房间，躺下，一边擦汗，边想算了，忍忍就过去了。
过了一会，我实在忍不住了。我用手捂着心，悄悄走向冰箱，不小心碰到了椅子，吓出了一身冷汗，心想这下糟了了，赶紧向后转，奔进房间，躺在床上装睡。过了大概一刻钟，我舒了一口气——老妈没醒。继续行动。
我做贼似的，轻轻挨近老爸老妈的卧室，把他们的房门关上，又回到房间，想先听听有没有什么动静。过了几分钟，没有动静，又过了大概五分钟，还是没有动静，于是，我忐忑不安地一步一步向冰箱靠近，越靠近冰箱，我的心跳得越快，我差不多可以听到“扑扑”的声音。我快速打开冰箱门，抽出一支雪糕揣在怀里，关上冰箱门，踮着脚尖跑进房间。我一把将门关上，撕开包装袋，走到阳台，把包装袋扔下去。把雪糕的上半节放在嘴里，忍着冰凉让它融化，然后不停地吸，吸得差不多了，再舔几下，然后一口咬下去，直接吞了下去。过了一两分钟，吃完了，我用力把棍子朝楼下扔去，然后胆战心惊地躺下睡觉。
过了几天，我一直担心有没有留下蛛丝马迹，有一天，看老妈心情不错，我也实在忍不住了，就把这件事讲给老妈听，她不但没有说我，反而笑我怎么那么傻。她还说限制我吃雪糕是为了我好。
后来回想起来，那支雪糕一点味道也没有。当时紧张的心情使我无法好好品味它的味道。
现在，每当我想起这件事，总感觉我自己是那么幼稚：开空调虽然声音大了点，可吵醒老妈也不会怎么样呀？为什么要偷吃雪糕呢？忍不住哈哈大笑。

Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinors hand, Marianne admits that while she \"loves him tenderly,\" she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister.
