企鹅们的胃口很不错。主要吃磷虾、小鱼，偶尔也捕食乌贼。平均每只企鹅每天能吃0。75公斤食物，与一个儿童差不多。企鹅在南极捕食磷虾约3317万吨，占南极鸟类总消耗量的90%呢，相当于鲸捕食磷虾的`一半，因此，企鹅在南大洋食物链中有着至关的重要性。可惜的是，它们没有牙齿，只能靠舌头及上颚上的倒刺来吞食鱼虾等食物。
企鹅喜欢生活在寒冷的气候中。因此，企鹅主要居住在南半球遥远的南极洲。尽管这样，它们的栖息地还是因种类不同而异：帝企鹅喜欢在冰架和海冰上栖息；阿德利企鹅可以在海冰上，也可以在无冰区的露岩上生活；在亚南极的企鹅，大都喜欢在无冰区的岩石上栖息，并常用石块筑巢。尽管极地酷寒难当，可经过数千万年的磨练，它们早已具备了抗寒的能力。全身的羽毛变得重叠，进化成密接的鳞片状。这种特殊的羽衣，使他们能在零下几百摄氏度的环境下生存。这样，它们打破了吉尼斯纪录，成为世界上最耐寒的鸟类。
