他叫丹佛·摩尔，易怒、危险且令人生畏，但是他不仅改变了一座城市，也为人们燃起了希望。他没受过教育，每天不停为“主子”捡棉花，但积蓄始终是零。后来，他跳上了路过的火车去流浪，万万没想到在那座陌生的城市里，他会遇到一个白人百万富翁，并且成了他的朋友。
他叫朗·霍尔，是一个百万富翁，有着敏锐的艺术眼光，以及绝佳的生意手腕。从卖罐头窜升到投资银行，再到买卖毕加索、凡·高的名画。他在好莱坞有大庄园、画廊及欧式古堡。而他也想象不到，他的下一页人生，竟是与一名流浪汉一起写下。
一个是受过高等教育且坐拥亿万资产的高端艺术品经销商，一个是没有读过一天书，从小生活在农场主庄园里的黑奴后代，两个看似没有丝毫关联的人却因为一次又一次的公益活动互相在对方的人生中携手写下了浓墨重彩的一笔。
不同于以往书籍仅从单一的角度来诉说一个故事，她是由朗·霍尔和丹佛·摩尔共同完成的作品，在阅读中不断地切换视角去看同一件事，你就会体会到心灵的奇妙，你就会明白，为什么在流浪汉的圈子里是不问名字的，明白为什么一个原本目标就是赚钱，慈善的主要目的也是为做场面的富翁却最终愿意将一个黑人流浪汉奉为心灵的导师和救赎者。
两位作者的'故事都从小时候开始讲起，肤色的差异注定两人的生活轨迹就像两条各自延展的平行线一样，一条通往富裕高端的天堂物质世界，另一条去向肮脏混乱的地下流浪汉世界，似乎没有什么理由能够让这两条具有天壤之别的“平行线”产生交点。然而，当这两条“平行线”都延伸到同一个背景时间的时候，时光就在那一刹那巧妙的交合，为双方同时开启了另一个世界的大门。
丹佛与朗之间的信任与友谊并非一蹴而就，作为一个从小就生活在“低人一等”世界中的黑人雇工、流浪汉对于白人他始终心怀戒备并用凶悍来掩饰自己的无所适从，并且坚信只有凶狠才能使自己得到最周全的保护。而在经历了一系列来自朗与妻子黛博拉真情实意的关怀与“爱”之后，丹佛选择不再用凶悍来包裹自己，并与朗进行了这样一番真挚的对话：
“然后他的微笑变得一本正经，仿佛他忽然看到一束光，然后窗帘又被拉上。他盯着从他咖啡杯冒出来的水蒸气看。“关于你的请求，我想了很久。”
我不知道他在说什么。“我请求你什么?” “当你的朋友。”
我下巴掉下来一英寸。我已经忘记是几时在仙人掌花咖啡店跟他说过，我要的只是他的友谊，他说他会想一想。我很震惊竟然有人花一个礼拜时间去想这种问题。我早已忘了那段对话，但是丹佛花了不少时间准备他的答案。”
也正是这样一次关于友谊的“深思熟虑”使得丹佛对于生活、生命、生存的态度慢慢开始转变，他不再需要凶悍来进行消极式的自我保护，转而用一种“爱”的方式来重新审视自己的生活以及身边的朋友，于是在得知黛博拉身患绝症时会“天真”的认为只要自己每夜向上帝虔诚地祈祷，必然能够对黛比小姐的病情有所帮助。并在黛博拉去逝后陪同朗一起渡过难关，代替黛博拉继续爱着这个世界。
对于朗而言，一开始去流浪者之家的公益行为，完全是出于对于妻子的尊重并坚信自己的妻子不可能长久忍受流浪者之家的恶劣环境。但一切在遇见丹佛以后发生逆转，丹佛对于友谊“慎重”的态度，迫使朗打破了一直因游走在物欲商场中而自然形成的对于友情的无谓态度。而在自己的妻子患病后，使朗惊讶的是，丹佛反而比自己更具有信念和理解力，甚至在面对妻子即将离世的最后时光里成为了他的心灵牧师。
正如全书结尾处所述：“人们往往以为自己与别人有很大的不同，被那个在上之人不同地看待，然而从某种角度来说，我们每个人都是流浪者，终要一步一步走向家园”。
面对生活中的种种，我们可以从不同的角度去审视、去体验、去经历、去感悟，并最终获得属于自己的信念。让我们在最艰难的时候，有人愿意陪我们一同走过!
