慕田峪长城位于北京市东北隅的怀柔县境内，距北京城73公里。此段长城西接北京昌平县的居庸关，东连北京密云县的古北口，自古以来就是拱卫北京的军事要冲，被称为“危岭雄关”。早在1400多年前的北齐，就在慕田峪筑有长城。明朝初年重建，明永乐二年(公元1404年建“慕田峪关”。隆庆三年(公元1569年，谭伦、戚继光镇守京畿时，又在明初长城的基础上加以修葺。现在慕田峪所保留修复的长城，为明代所修筑，是全国明代长城遗迹中保存最好的地段之一。
慕田峪由于地理位置十分重要，在此曾发生过多次战事。其中最著名的是明代的几次战争，明初徐达和元兵也曾大战于此。慕田峪长城多建在外侧陡峭的崖边，依山就势，以险制厄。墙体高七八米，墙顶宽四五米，建筑材料以花岗条石为主，雄伟坚固。慕田峪长城，墙顶上两边都建有矮墙垛口，可两面拒敌，外侧还挖掘有挡马坑，使防御功能更加完善，这是一大特点。
