路上碰见的`第一个动物有长脸大耳四条腿。“你是人吗？”狮子吼道，震得树林的叶子落了一地。长脸大耳四条腿的动物垂下头，满嘴白沫口齿不清地说，自己是一头倒霉的驴子，被人饿了三天之后还差点儿被打断了腿。“人是最坏的动物！”它控诉道。
小狮子要替驴子报仇，于是它们一前一后结伴同行，紧接着碰到的动物身上有一个巨大的肿块。“你是人吗？”狮子大吼，震落了树木的叶子。
背着肿块的动物声泪俱下，它当然不是人了，它是被人折磨得奄奄一息的骆驼。“那儿连撒尿的自由都不给，人是最坏的动物！”骆驼愤愤地说。
最后，它碰到了一个两腿直立而行的动物，吹着口哨。驴子和骆驼吓得躲到树林里去了，狮子大吼一声：“你是人吗？”震得叶子落了一地。
那两条腿的动物不慌不忙地说：“我是个木匠。”“哦，不是人。”小狮子有点儿泄气了，但还是问了一句，“木匠能追兔子吗？”
木匠说，他不会追兔子，但能做挡风遮雨的房子，如果狮子愿意，他可以马上做一个给它。小狮子骄傲地点点头。木匠卸下背上的工具箱，乒乒乓乓地敲打起来，不一会儿就制成了一个长方形的大木盒子。他对小狮子说：“得量身材，请跳进去试试。”
狮子一跃而入。
木匠说：“趴下来，把尾巴也收进去，我要试试盖子严不严，透不透气。”
狮子趴下，把尾巴收进盒里。木匠将盖子盖上，四周钉上了钉子，然后把木盒连同狮子卖给了马戏团。
驴子和骆驼在一旁看得目瞪口呆。驴子说：“其实跟人在一起，有水喝有料吃，我看咱们还是跟人走吧！”
骆驼说：“是啊！那些叛逃在外的也不是什么好东西，咱们还是跟人走吧！”木匠就把工具箱绑在骆驼背上，骑上驴子，吹着口哨，得意洋洋地上路了。
